About this listen

From the gothic eccentricity of Asheville, North Carolina, to the terrifying recesses of the Appalachian wilderness, from modern demonology to ancient Cherokee mythology, Soul Catcher follows the tormented journey of folk artist Livia Belane, who has been stalked through many lives by a sadistic and vengeful demon.

Livia and her loved ones, including her frontier-era soulmate and husband, Ian, a Soul Hunter, have never beaten the demon before. Now, in this life, he's found them again.

"Hello from Deborah Smith, now writing as Leigh Bridger. If you know me from my women's fiction novels like A Place to Call Home, Sweet Hush, A Gentle Rain, The Crossroads Cafe, On Bear Mountain, and others, you may wonder why I've taken off in this new direction, under a pen name. I love the urban fantasy genre, I love folk art… and I love Asheville, North Carolina. So putting all three together in a fast-paced, sexy, and some might say way-violent novel, was great fun. Soul Catcher is not for the faint of heart, and it's not the same tone or style as my women's fiction, so that's why I picked a pen name."

Okay story that jumped around too much

“This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.”
I really wanted to like this book. I liked the story line, liked the characters but felt they weren't developed enough. I felt like it was jumbled a little and I couldn't get into the flow of it. Interesting premise though and I would give the author another listen.

Reincarnation With A Vengeance

Livia is a Soul Catcher and her man, Ian, is a Soul Hunter. They have lived many lifetimes and been murdered many times by a pig-faced demon with a serious hard on for hurting Livia over and over. “Soul Catcher” is a mostly well crafted, dark, violent urban fantasy novel meant for adults. I say mostly well crafted because I just don’t get the Cobs. You’ll have to read/listen to it to get what I mean.

I thought the magic system was original, if not inconvenient. Livia has to paint a picture of who or what she’s after. This traps the subject then she burns the painting in order to destroy the captured subject. If this were a movie and I was a supporting actor in it, I’d be screaming a line like, “Who makes these rules!?”

Narrator Traci Odom does a wonderful job with Ms. Bridger’s material. She even tackles a bastardized accent for a character born in one part of the world, but who has lived for an extended period of time in another place. I’m not sure what that accent should sound like in real life, but I could definitely buy Ms. Odom’s vocal choice.

Finally, this audio book was provided by the narrator at no cost in exchange for an honest review, courtesy of Audio Book Blast. When I got this book I found out shortly after that it’s from 2009 and that the author wrote it under another name. Leigh Bridger is actually Deborah Smith, a New York Times best-selling author of romance novels. Ms. Bridger or Ms. Smith, if you prefer, published “Soul Catcher” through the publishing house, Belle Bridge Books, an imprint of Belle Books where she is a partner. “Soul Catcher” is book one of her Outsider Trilogy, but books two and three have never been a released. I don’t know why but the fact that book one was recently offered through Audio Book Blast has me hoping that means book two and three will finally be released sometime soon. If not, It’s a shame and I feel cheated since the story is unfinished.

I paint you, I trap you, I burn you

Any additional comments?

Really good, creative, unusual, enjoyable and entertaining story. The story pulls you in from the start and never lets go.

This is a dark, twisted, unusual, violent story at times. There are scenes that include rape as well as tender sex scenes. There is also cursing throughout so if you don't like these things in your books, this is not the book for you. (But you'll be missing a really good story).

Interesting story about Livia who is a Soul Catcher and her(husband) soulmate Ian who is a Soul Hunter. They both along with "protectors" have been reincarnated over and over during the coarse of 236 years . Each time they find one another again one of them dies. The vengeful demon who has hunted them throughout this time has found them again.

The story does end a cliffhanger or a to be continued.

This is the first book that I have read by this author under this pen name or as she is more commonly known Deborah Smith. This story is listed as The Outsider Series book 1, but it was published in 2009 (?), from what I was able to find there have been no more books added to the trilogy so far. Hopefully the author will be adding more books to the series soon.

Traci Odom does a fantastic job with the narration. She brought the characters and story to life in an her amazing narration. Great character voices. Clearly spoken. Smooth even pace. Pleasant voice that you can listen to for hours. She is definitely one of the best narrators out there.

Not for the squeamish

This book is very dark, violent and brutal. Not for the squeamish. Not exactly what I was expecting but I loved it. The mythology created was pretty awesome. I really enjoyed the characters. The story jumped right in and I was never bored. Definitely going to follow this series.

The narrator did an awesome job. Great performance.

I love this narrator!

What made the experience of listening to Soul Catcher the most enjoyable?

The most enjoyable part of this book was the remarkable job by the narrator, Traci Odom. She vocally captures the characters so beautifully and traverses between them with such fine drawn distinction. Clearly, she has taken enormous care with these characterizations and it shows, as these people leap right out of the book, just as Livia's paintings come to life in the story.

I could listen to Traci Odom read to me all day long!

Not my type of urban fantasy

This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBoom dot com.

I really liked the narrator. She uses some kind of southern accent for the story and gives nice monstrous voices. I think the best part of the audiobook was the narrator.

The story on the other hand.... The synopsis was brief and sounded interesting, so I wanted to read it. I usually don't read reviews, but this time I wish i did. The author throws a lot of information at us very quickly. We go through the main character's childhood in the first chapter and learn everyone dies. As a child she's sympathetic, but as an adult I lose interest in her. With everything from profanity to rape, this story isn't really my type, which is unfortunate since I really love urban fantasy.

Souls with a purpose on a quest to survive and defeat evil that haunts them ♡

I thoroughly enjoyed "Soul Catcher". The beginning was hard for.me understanding the actions of the heroine's mother. But slowly began to understand. There is lots of violence and plenty of foul language. There was some sex; but it was part of the story. The story focuses on eternal souls who are destined to fight evil. It combines Cherokee legends, myths, and traditions of old with modern times. I thought that was unique. It made for a very mystical world.

The heroine in the story is a woman named Livia. As a child she draws a painting and receives a message: "Draw them. Trap them. Burn them." Her Mother's reaction scares Her as much, and she's accused of killing her mother and brother. After spending some time in a Mental facility, she returns to NC. The only place that calls to her and has ever known. She's a soul catcher dedicated to capturing and destroying evil beings from this world. In an earlier, different life and time, she crossed paths with a pig faced demon. Every time her soul began a new life, he would come for her, and kill Her and those who help Her.

Livia becomes an old soul that is reborn over and over again. Never remembering Her old lives, always living a solitary life. Running and hiding from someone else other than Pig Face. Whom and why is a reason she herself can't remember. In order to remember her past lives and remember how to banish souls, she needs to remember her soul mate. A soul hunter named Ian. ( '∀`)ノ~ ♡ Ian is a Scot-Irish soul that is called to Livia throughout many lifetimes. One night after being viciously raped by a man possessed by pig face demon, she calls him back to her after drawing him. He comes to her; but he takes the body of the one possessed by her demon attacker. Learning to trust a man she can't bear sight of, and trying to remember a past becomes an adventure. ♡

Narrator Traci Odom was magnificent. It must be hard for female voices to do all sorts of characters, even more male ones. Her different accents and way of telling the story brought the characters to life. Lots of characters! There were some eccentric, hippie artist friends of Livia. It was hard to keep up with all the characters for me. Yet, narrator Traci Odom did a splendid work with each one of them. Didn't realize it until the end. Even that was made exiting, making you want to know what happens next. Kudos to narrator for such an excellent work. Looking forward to the next book.
