Story
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Story
American Book Award-winning author Tananarive Due's second collection of stories ranges from horror to science fiction to suspense. From the mysterious, magical town of Gracetown to the aftermath of a pandemic to the reaches of the far future, Due's stories all share a sense of dread and fear balanced with heart and hope. In some of these stories, the monster is racism itself; others address the monster within, or other universal struggles set against the supernatural or surreal. All of them are written with Due's trademark attention to detail and deep characterization.

Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Editorial reviews
Traveling back and forth in time, the listener is sucked up into every moment as the story reaches its thrilling climax. Miles captures and makes the most of each moment of terror and suspense like a guide who tells you only as much as you need to know. She also shows great skill as her voice switches from male to female, elderly Haitian woman to small-town Sheriff.
Overall, a story that would make any person squirm, but so engrossing you just can't help but listen.
Critic reviews
"Due handles the potentially unwieldy elements of her novel with confidence, cross-cutting smoothly from past to present, introducing revelatory facts that alter the interpretation of earlier scenes and interjecting powerfully orchestrated moments of supernatural horror that sustain the tale's momentum....[Due is] a writer who grows better with each book." (Publishers Weekly)

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Some of us like our fiction unabridged
And this is exactly why! I'm a big fan of Tananarive Due's THE GOOD HOUSE. Fabulous. Creepy. Scary (for me--I know you hardcore horror fans have a much higher tolerance!). I must be the only reader in north America who loathes Stephen King, and I'm not usually a fan of horror. (I'm more science- and speculative fiction). I can't praise this book enough. (as a side note, I was also introduced the cubano group The Orishas through this novel). This is a long book, so near the end you may find yourself running into a bookstore so you can finish it quickly, but I see that as proof that the author totally draws us in.

Riviting
Here and there a little bit hard to follow because of the constant jumping around on the timeline, but as a whole this is a great book. As an ardent Stephen King fan I have to declare her a worthy disciple of King?s style (not yet his equal, but if the critics are right, we will be in for a treat). I can?t wait for her next book.

Superb Thriller
I rarely take time to write a review, however this book merits a review and more.
The characters are multi-dimensional and the story will keep you curious to the end.
Tananarive Due is an excellent author- I am looking forward to her next story!

LOVED IT!!!
I throughly enjoy a good creepy tale. Among my favorites would be Stephen King and Dean Koontz. This author did not disappoint. I was so engrossed in the story that I couldn't stop listening to it. I was extremely intrigued as to where it would lead. The story does fluctuate between past and present, which I count as a plus as it kept me in constant suspense. Due is a fantastic author! I look forward to her next audiobook.

Disappointed Ending
it took a long long time to get into where I felt the book began to get good. The beginning took terribly long to set the story and the ending was not as I would have preferred it to end, but I wasn't surprised.

Amazing story, but even better performance
What did you love best about The Good House?
Everything. The characters, the performance, the originality.
What did you like best about this story?
It was different and unique. I don't want to give anything away, but I was positively hooked.
Which character – as performed by Robin Miles – was your favorite?
ALL OF THEM! This has been the best performance of any narrator that I have listened to so far. She switched in and out of each character with ease. The accents were positively amazing. I will be seeking out more books narrated by her.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
For sure!

Mesmerizing
I listened to this book at work, on break, during my lunch (which by the way...I usually nap then) Excellent book! While listening, I even researched some of the voudon references. Wouldn't follow them but made for excellent reading!

A very entertaining book...I was rivited!
Would you listen to The Good House again? Why?
Definately! If I run across a very good story...I will listen a few times.
What did you like best about this story?
Mostly, because it was from the town my cousin lives in. But I found it to be a very engaging listen.
What about Robin Miles’s performance did you like?
I think she did a fantastic job at creating each character with her voice. I truly believed I was listening to each person, not just the narrator!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not particularly.
Any additional comments?
I am trying to expand my authors, and was very happy to find this author!

Wonderful listen!
I loved listening to this book. When it was over, I was satisfied with the story, but I still wanted to hear more either of the characters or in the same style.
While there are several flashbacks, they are well labeled and easy to place in the history of the story. The characters were very believable and well fleshed out. The reader did an excellent job with reading the characters, too. I liked it so much that when my husband started reading parts of the hardcover, I was correcting his pronunciation of the names!
