Publisher's summary

You’ve heard Doc Holliday’s history, but do you know his story?

His name conjures images of the Wild West–of gunfights, gambling halls, and a legendary friendship with Wyatt Earp–but before Doc Holliday was a Western legend, he was a Southern Son. The story begins in Civil War Georgia, as young John Henry Holliday welcomes home his heroic father and learns a terrible secret about his mother, with his only confidant being his favorite cousin Mattie.

As the Confederacy falls and tragedy strikes, John Henry’s hero worship turns to bitter anger, joining with a gang of vigilantes to chase the Reconstruction Yankees out of their small Georgia town. When their murderous plot is discovered and brings threats of military prison, he vows to change his reckless ways, leaving home to attend dental school in Philadelphia and hoping to become a respected professional man worthy of asking for his cousin Mattie’s hand. But when he returns from two years in the North, he finds family intrigues, lies, and revelations, rivals for Mattie’s affections—and a violent encounter that changes everything and starts him on the road to becoming a Western legend.

Southern Son is the first book in the award-winning Saga of Doc Holliday, an epic American tale of heroes and villains, dreams lost and found, families broken and reconciled, sin and recompense, and the redeeming power of love.

Loved this book!!

Just finished listening to this book. Couldn't wait to get in the car and turn on my book and now I am anxiously awaiting books two and three. Having ties to both Pennsylvania and Colorado, I could picture just what the author was trying to communicate. Almost everyone knows something about Doc Holliday. Victoria Wilcox fills in the missing pieces. The narration for Southern Son was easy to listen to and very well done.

Excellent!

Great story about Doc Holliday's early years. Read the book and enjoyed the Audiobook. Highly recommend for anyone who is interested in Tombstone or the Wild West. Well researched historical fiction-the author made the subject interesting and the story well paced. Look forward to the next two books of the trilogy!

Much more than I expected!

This is not normally the type of book I would listen to. However, a friend recommended it and after the first few minutes I was hooked. The writing kept me very interested. Obviously, the author did some deep research and knows exactly what she is talking about. There is much that I never knew about the Civil War period and so much I learned throughout the story. The narration was captivating. I kept wanting to hear more. Each character became very real to me. I was sorry that the book ended and I am anxiously awaiting the next 2 books on audio. I especially liked the ending which made me look forward to the sequels. What a story!

Southern Son, the saga of Doc Holliday

There is only one word for this book “excellent “!!! I have read many historical books from different time periods, this one kept me interested from chapter 1. I believe it captures the real Doc Holliday and not the legend that we all grew up with. It focuses on both the positive and negative parts of his character that shows us his human side.
