About this listen

Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel...except he's not doing it. And no one seems to believe him. No one but a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans...and keeps him totally off balance.

Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own. Gabriel can't let her guess about his brothers, his abilities, and the danger that's right at his heels. But there are some risks he can't help taking.

My favorite of the series!

Very much a great series but this is definitely my favorite of the books. The narrator also happens to be one of my favorites as well.

Good story, with sensitivity flaws

I respect a story that includes characters who have characteristics that might cause an experience of marginalization. However, use of the "r" word and then having the character with a disability constantly defending against the term as though it's a huge insult, harms readers with intellectual disabilities. Also, when writing about people with physical differences, magically "curing" them of the difference thereby erasing it, isn't really the strong positive empowering advocacy message the author intends. It's essentially saying "Her skin looks like everyone else now" so she's "corrected" and therefore got her happily ever after. Versus having her embrace whatever gives her an unusual look and having others accept her. That's the stronger move toward inclusion.

I still loved both main characters. Perhaps the disability angle hasn't aged very well with the times.

I think that it was one of my faveourite audibles this year and I hope that more people will read it because it was amazing

I was up all night trying to listening to the whole thing because I really wanted to finish it.!

Exceptional

Exceptional story with new ideas. A bit of teen angst and a caring set of challenged brothers pitted against everyone even the people whose lives they're trying to save. I like how they aren't perfect either. They have a deep seeded understanding of loss and guilt

All the wait for a cutoff

Spoilers! The whole book is about a relationship and when Gabe is finally ready to open up the book literally ends. All the build up for nothing.

pretty darn good

I really enjoyed Spark and Storm as well. I'm also looking forward to the next installments in this series. Each brother is incredibly intriguing and I like being inside their heads. Plus I think Brigid is saving the best for last. Michael geys more mysterious and likeable in every book.

But that's another story. I really liked being in Gabriel's head. he's a a hothead both literally and figuratively. he's not perfect, he screws up and he's got baggage that makes a lot of it understandable and makes his good choices more outstanding. and I liked Layne and Simon even though her parents kind of suck her dad improved towards the end. Overall it was a nice listen while I got through my work morning.

Goes too fast

The story is pretty good and the narrator is decent. He just goes too fast between chapters. My preference is that there should be a short pause, especially since a new chapter also ususally indicates a scene change or change of perspective.

Gabriel

Gabriel

This is Gabriel's story, in the first book we were introduced to all the Merrick boys. Gabriel has a lot of anger and aggression built up, but he also feels isolated even though he's not alone. It seems that people have alternative motives when they spend time with him and it hurts more than he wants to admit. He finds true friendship in the people he doesn't really expect. This book also has some action in it, and I enjoyed it more than book one, but these books should be read in order.

Better Than the First Book

I had the pleasure of listening to these books ten years ago, but unfortunately, I forgot a significant portion of the content. Upon re-listening, I found that I appreciated this installment much more than the first. The characters of Gabriel and Layne were more relatable and endearing. I particularly enjoyed the sweet and kind nature of Layne, and the trope of the intelligent and beautiful protagonist capturing the heart of the popular jock, much to the dismay of the mean-spirited girls. The incorporation of sign language added a delightful layer of depth to the narrative. The revelation of the individual responsible for the fires was a stunning plot twist.
