About this listen
Morgan Beale is a pop icon - and hates every second of it. He begins adapting the latest best seller, The Chihuahua in the Blue Prada Bag, into a blockbuster movie just before his celebutante wife starts remodeling their Hollywood home, driving Beale to a hotel. Dodging the paparazzi one morning on his way to Starbucks, he spots his writing partner, Luke, who has been dead for over a decade, and who is staring into a mysterious hole in the ground. Driving headlong into the hole, they discover the surreal otherworld of Starbucks Nation, a film set littered with characters from Beales life and the novel he's adapting, including a talking Chihuahua and an elite commando unit of ethnic cookie-making elves.
Mercilessly lampooning our fascination with reality television, celebrity blunders, and mindless infotainment, Starbucks Nation brilliantly showcases the absurdities of modern society.

Story
Audio is a unique medium. It invites listeners to become a part of the process, to interpret what they hear, however they'd like; whereas motion pictures leave no such room for input. With the completion of this book, it dawned on me that, as an actor by trade, I could play the part; and I'm knee-deep in actor pals - why not record the book like a radio play? So that's exactly what happened. I rounded up an excellent troupe of thespians, from both Los Angeles and my home state of Oregon, and we recorded what was to become this epic listen for you to hear!

Story
Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

Take one look at Kevin Smith: He's a balding fatty who wears a size XXL hockey jersey, shorts, and slippers year-round. Not a likely source for life advice. But take a second look at Kevin Smith: He changed filmmaking forever when he was twenty-four with the release of Clerks, and since then has gone on to make nine more profitable movies, runs his own production company, wrote a best-selling graphic novel, and has a beautiful wife and kids. So he must be doing something right.

Story
On a foggy summer night, 11 people - 10 privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter - depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: The plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family. Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work?

Editorial reviews
Starbucks Nation is one part postmodern fairy tale, one part satire of modern life - at least as it's lived in overly caffeinated, celebrity-obsessed LA. Performer Nicholas Tecosky's pleasant but flat tones are well-suited to author Chris Ver Wiel's acerbic tale, which skewers everything in Hollywood from morning shows and celebrity magazines to white wine-swilling producers and image-obsessed starlets. Though things start out normally enough - the extremely cynical screenwriter Morgan Beale is adapting the best seller The Chihuahua in the Blue Prada Bag - they take a turn for the seriously weird when Beale runs into his long-dead writing partner next to a hearse. A fun listen for those who like their satire dark, dry, and jaded.
