About this listen

Best-selling author Margaret Maron creates entertaining mysteries filled with warm southern charm, colorful down-home characters, and smoldering grudges. In Storm Track, swirling dark clouds of illicit affairs and brutal murder threaten Colleton County, North Carolina. No one worries much about the scantily clad woman found strangled in the Orchid Motel, she must be a tourist who brought along her own problems. But when the victim turns out to be the wife of one of Colleton County's up-and-coming lawyers, the news comes as a thunderclap. People begin looking suspiciously among themselves for the culprit, and Judge Deborah Knott learns her own handsome cousin possesses a mighty powerful motive. While Deborah searches for the vicious killer, a deadly hurricane rages up the Carolina coast, bringing destruction and its own kind of justice. Winner of the Edgar and Agatha Awards, Margaret Maron bases this series on her life in rural North Carolina. Narrator C.J. Critt's lilting performance captures both the crackling wit and the heightening suspense.Don't miss the other books in the Deborah Knott mystery series.©2000 Margaret Maron (P)2000 Recorded Books Detective Fiction Legal Suspense Thriller Women Sleuths Women's Fiction Mystery North Carolina

Weaving of tangled webs

A hurricane is gearing up to strike Colleton County, North Carolina in book seven of the series. Lynn Bullock is found murdered in a local motel. Judge Knott’s cousin Reid is the number one suspect. It seems to me that each book in the series has one of the Knott family accused of something. Good thing it is a large family, Deborah is the youngest of twelve children.

The book is well written. The murder plot unravels with few surprises, but the focus of the story is on the subplots, detailing interpersonal travails among the Knott family and friends. Maron’s books are about the rural Southern community, its abiding pleasures and inevitable complexities. I would like to have more courtroom drama in at least one of the books.
C. J. Critt does an excellent job narrating this series.

Lackluster

Semi General Spoilers....

The general plot idea should have been easy to do well, either Deb, kin, & friends are trapped inside with a killer by the hurricane or maybe the killer is trying to get in but the calvary can't get there due to the storm....

Instead the storm is poorly incorporated, the killer dies in a random accident (so the author is saved from having to come up with a 'how'd he do it) and everything is severely anti-climatic. When you stop to think about it, most of what the various characters did during the whole story makes very little sense.

Least of the series and I must have read about half the Knott saga
