About this listen

Novelist Anne George injects murder, mayhem, and laughs into her popular mysteries. Nominated for an Agatha Award, this hilarious tale of two “60 something” sisters reveals the deadly consequences of a hasty real estate purchase.

Retired Alabama school teacher Patricia Anne thinks her older sister, flamboyant Mary Alice, has lost her cotton-pickin’ mind. On a whim, Mary Alice bought the Skoot ’n’ Boot, the local country western night spot where she and her boyfriend hang out. Mary Alice insists it will be easy to run the club - until the previous owner is found executed, gangland style, in the club’s wishing well. Suddenly the sheriff is demanding answers, and a killer with unfinished business is sending messages even optimistic Mary Alice can’t ignore.

With her dramatic sense of timing, narrator Ruth Ann Phimister brings out both the wise-cracking fun and the nail-biting suspense.

The Narrator

To be fair, I read these before I listened to them and the narrator doesn't work for me. Sorry I bought this series.

As good as the print edition!

It’s not so often that I enjoy an audiobook more than the print edition. But in this case, the narrator did such a fantastic job, that the book came to life in a special way for me.

This is a great series of books. Real cozy mysteries. Funny. But, where as somebody does get killed, nobody really gets hurt.

It’s wacky, like Stephanie Plum, but without Morelli and Ranger, and with 2 sisters in their sixties. Try it!

Fun listen

Enjoyable southern tale of two sisters (read with a great accent), double names, bickering over silly matters but you know they love each other dearly type of story. On a whim, the single sister buys a "the Boot Scootin' Bar" where she loves to go line dancing, and that's when the trouble begins! First the former owner gets killed!! Can this story get any more complicated? Woo Hoo hold on to your hats, here we go!

Love the Southern Sisters

I love this series, and I love the narrator, as well - the voices are perfect, she has excellent timing, and you can roll each word around in your ears and savor it. The series is such fun - I was so sad to find that Anne George had died after writing the eighth book - this series would have kept me entertained for many more volumes. I originally bought these books in paperback, then on cassette through Recorded Books, then in hardback through eBay, and then - the day they were released on Audible, as audio files. I have listened to them many times, shared them with friends, and recommended them to others. I highly recommend the series to anyone who might like a Southern-flavored cozy mystery.
