About this listen

In the year 1818, Kerah has inherited an Egyptian merchant business, the estate, and the mines. She is plunged into an entirely new world after a ruthless betrayal shatters her charmed life. After a tremendous loss and a violent storm at sea, she finds herself at the mercy of a charismatic and handsome foreigner. The Scotsman is determined to keep her by his side. She has other plans.

Circumstances dictate that she must accompany strangers to Scotland. Kerah finds herself completely out of her element and unexpectedly surrounded by blood and death. She must battle her way through the unknown at every turn. Desire collides with duty in this unique tale of historical intrigue.

This book is a compilation of a three-book series. It is action-packed and fast-paced. It's a diamond in the rough. Romance is a broad genre, but it's never been done like this before.

A Rich Historical World with a Heroine Still Finding Her Feet

First off, let’s talk about the setting—this historical romance and really nails the details and makes you feel like you’ve been transported back in time. The world-building is rich and the characters feel true to the era, which I absolutely loved. But then there's Kira. Sigh. Kira, Kira, Kira. She’s portrayed as this accomplished warrior, a fierce soldier, and all that jazz, but every time it comes to actually showing those skills in action, she seems… a little less than ready. More like "I’m gonna not listen, do what I’m not supposed to do in a strange land aaaaand she ends up captured so Angus has to rescue her… I didn’t like that… stubborn for stubborn sake? There was no real display of combat prowess, which was disappointing… I’ve seen the whole "poisoning as a tactical move" thing in other books—read in another historical book, a meek Arabic woman who did it, successfully—so it didn’t exactly blow my mind here.

Honestly, it would’ve been better if we didn’t get these grand declarations about how amazing she is at combat unless she’s actually prepared for it. Instead, she’s often making rookie mistakes, which really undermines her reputation as this “strong” warrior. And then there's Angus, who spoilers—goes easy on her. I’m not sure if that’s sweet or just frustrating. Either way, it didn’t feel like she earned all the praise.

I expected more from a woman of color…

On the positive side, the historical aspects of the book were so good, I wondered if these places actually existed in these cities, which I truly appreciated. You can tell the author did their research and it added depth to the whole experience. However, I wish I'd known going in that this was going to end on a cliffhanger. Ugh, I don’t care for cliffhangers at all…

Overall, a solid read if you're into historical settings and strong side characters and well, Kira wasn’t weak per se, I just didn’t appreciate that she too, lacked common sense at times… Angus 😆 was Angus.
Sigh, Kira's inconsistencies and the cliffhanger left me a little… disappointed. Would’ve been much better without all the mixed signals about her “warrior” persona.

Worth a listen still…
