About this listen
Brutal and beautiful, Stray is the true story of a girl who runs away and finds herself.
After growing up in a dysfunctional and emotionally abusive home, Tanya Marquardt runs away on her sixteenth birthday. Her departure is an act of rebellion and survival - whatever she is heading toward has to be better than what she is leaving behind.
Struggling with her inner demons, Tanya must learn to take care of herself during two chaotic years in the working-class mill town of Port Alberni, followed by the early-nineties underground goth scene in Vancouver, British Columbia. She finds a chosen family in her fellow misfits, and the bond they form is fierce and unflinching.
Told with raw honesty and strength, Stray reveals Tanya’s fight to embrace the vulnerable, beguiling parts of herself and heal the wounds of her past as she forges her own path to a new life.

Theodora knows she can't keep her five beautiful daughters at home forever - they're too curious, too free spirited, too like their late father. And so, before each girl leaves the small house on the riverside at the foot of Mount Olympus, Theodora makes sure they know they are always welcome to return. A devoted and resilient mother, Theodora has lived through World War II, through the Nazi occupation of Greece, and through her husband's death, and now she endures the twenty-year-long silence of her daughters' absence.

1945. Allied forces liberate Nazi-occupied Brno, Moravia. For Gerta Schnirch, daughter of a Czech mother and a German father aligned with Hitler, it’s not deliverance; it’s a sentence. She has been branded an enemy of the state. Caught in the changing tides of a war that shattered her family - and her innocence - Gerta must obey the official order: she, along with all ethnic Germans, is to be expelled from Czechoslovakia. With nothing but the clothes on her back and an infant daughter, she’s herded among thousands, driven from the only home she’s ever known.

Inspired as a boy by the multiple meanings to be found for a single word in the dictionary, Kohei Araki is devoted to the notion that a dictionary is a boat to carry us across the sea of words. But after thirty-seven years creating them at Gembu Books, it's time for him to retire and find his replacement. He discovers a kindred spirit in Mitsuya Majime - a young, disheveled square peg with a penchant for collecting antiquarian books and a background in linguistics - whom he swipes from his company's sales department.

Years ago, Beth Lathrop and her sister Kate suffered what they thought would be the worst tragedy of their lives the night both the famous painting Moonlight and their mother were taken. The detective assigned to the case, Conor Reid, swore to protect the sisters from then on. Beth moved on, throwing herself fully into the art world, running the family gallery, and raising a beautiful daughter with her husband Pete. Kate, instead, retreated into herself and took to the skies as a pilot, always on the run.

Everything about 15-year-old Cat's new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter until she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena's orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

Story
Liz Murray was born to loving but drug-addicted parents in the Bronx. In school she was taunted for her dirty clothing and lice-infested hair, eventually skipping so many classes that she was put into a girls' home. At age 15, Liz found herself on the streets when her family finally unraveled. She learned to scrape by, foraging for food and riding subways all night to have a warm place to sleep. Then, when Liz's mother died of AIDS, she decided to take control of her own destiny.

By the time Wendy Lawless turned 17, she'd known for quite some time that she didn't have a normal mother. But that didn't stop her from wanting one.... Georgann Rea didn't bake cookies or go to PTA meetings; she wore a mink coat and always had a lit Dunhill plugged into her cigarette holder. She went through men like Kleenex, and didn't like dogs or children. Georgann had the ice queen beauty of a Hitchcock heroine and the cold heart to match.

In April 2002, Janine Latus' youngest sister, Amy, wrote a note and taped it to the inside of her desk drawer. "Today Ron Ball and I are romantically involved", it read, "but I fear I have placed myself at risk in a variety of ways. Based on his criminal past, writing this out just seems like the smart thing to do. If I am missing or dead this obviously has not protected me...."

I Wanted More
Title: Stray: Memoir of a Runaway
Author: Tanya Marquardt
Format: Audio
Narrator: Tanya Marquardt
Genre: Nonfiction, memoir
Standalone: yes
Part of a Series: no
POV: Tanya
Steam Level: Nothing sexy but some sexual content

I picked up Stray since it sounded interesting. And it was. I was engrossed by Tanya Marquardt's story with some current insights to past situations. However, I wanted a bit more - especially on how she reconnected with her mom and family or what happened to her friends. I felt like it ended abruptly and made me question if I should know the author's story. So I did a quick search and only found info on this book.

Opportunity for greater understanding
When a book brings me to a greater understanding of unfamiliar life paths and experiences, I am grateful for the expansion. When I find my impressions of others has been softened with compassion, I am humbled by the privilege. I thank Tanya Marquardt for the offer of her experiences. Add to that, she does a fine narration of her book in audible.

Pretty Interesting...
This true story was pretty interesting and , I thought, tells the story of so many other children in our world who are trying their best to "make it" the best way they can with what support, little as it may be, that they are given but somehow rising above it all. I did understand and appreciated that the author narrated her own character, however, I did not enjoy her narration of some of the other characters - especially her mother's. This depiction actually took away from my enjoyment , as it sounded really artificial.

Teenage couch hopper
I love memoirs but this one bored me. A rebellious teenage Goth girl who chain smokes, gets black out drunk and couch hops from friend to friend finding a place to sleep at night. That's pretty much the entire book. There wasn't much of a conclusion but there wasn't much of a story to begin with.
I didn't feel the Author was a runaway, more of a girl who just wanted to hang with friends all the time and get as drunk as humanly possible. If this book had an odor it would smell like stale cigarette smoke. body odor and day old booze. Not a fan.

Unengaging
Quite frankly, I can't stand the narrator's voice....but also, this story is uninteresting. Many people are raised this way and the author sounds like a whiner. Many kids have had it much worse.

Do Not Read
This book had nothing to do with the description. It was a self involved teenager who wanted to be an adult without getting a job, or doing any work. Leaves her house, lives with a friend and goes back home. Poor story flow. Self indulgent. Insulting to real runaways.
