Publisher's summary

The chilling story of the abduction of two teenagers, their escape, and the dark secrets that, years later, bring them back to the scene of the crime.

It’s senior-year spring break, and Noelle Meyer and Evan Sinclair have been kidnapped. Neither knows why they were chosen, only that they share a tragic past: Evan’s father got away with killing Noelle’s mother, effectively ruining her family when the death was ruled an accident.

Despite the connection that should have made them enemies, the teens instead unite to face their other common denominator—their abductors. Noelle and Evan survive one sadistic circumstance after another, eventually making a harrowing escape. But every happy ending comes at a price…

Years later, Evan, now a private investigator, revisits the crime when he learns it may be ongoing. He reaches out to Noelle for help, and they discover that the answers lie with a man known only as the Collector. To close their case and solve the ones that followed, Noelle and Evan must unmask this mysterious spectator—the only man who knows enough secrets to take their captors down.

Critic reviews

“The thriller elements will keep readers turning pages and, in the midst of all the darkness, the romance is surprisingly sweet. Sheridan’s fans will not be disappointed.”Publishers Weekly

Interesting story

I enjoyed the story. It kept me interested and not wanting to put it down. Unfortunately I feel this story although a story of fiction probably happens everyday with human trafficking. The narrators did a good job.

It took hold of my emotions and played them like a ping pong ball.

Story was grim, grisly and sad and happy all at the same time. It was a greatly satisfying love story, horror story and mystery. I was only negatively distracted by Evan’s narrator but it in no way took away from the overall satisfaction of the deeply moving story.

Intense

Very unique story. I really like how the writer didn't hold back on making the reader uncomfortable with the terrors of the dark web and it's horrific realities that we pretend don't exist.
I could have done with less of the love making scene (it wasn't a rape scene-and there were none written), but I understood the purpose of it. They just tend to take me out of the suspense of the story.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book and found myself engaged for hours more than a few times.

Crazy ride

Mia Sheridan does it again! Disturbing subject matter, but so well written. If you need a good mystery, this is it.

What a great story!

This is my first Mia Sheridan book, I had it on my TBR for a while now, and saw a rec for it. I took that as my sign that I needed to read it now! It kept my interest from the very start. I listened to the audible as well, loved the narrators. I did like the many twists that were in the book. Story is about 2 people who were kidnapped and held in cages. They realize they know each other, they went to the same school, and they are not on friendly terms. They are basically enemies.. part of the torture of being kidnapped is they have the option to have harm caused to the other person to save themselves, or they can endure the torture that is to come. If you were a captive with your enemy, would you save them from being hurt?

Fabulous story...but with triggers

Mia Sheridan is a consistent "Go-To" author. have enjoyed her writing for many years and several of them are my top favorite of all time.

but....another female narrator would have been better. the first part of the book, with plenty of drama; could easily accept why yhe narrator chose a "teary voice"...bit throughout the whole book? made Noelle sound like a whiner. that was the ONLY drawback to this very emotional and victorious novel.
