Story
They were the men and women of the Royal Navy's Special Operations units. Carrying out lightning raids on hostile coasts, they became a navy within a navy - each handpicked for their individual skills, and all of them courageous. Against the mighty backdrop of World War II they performed their small but deadly operations - living often beyond hope, sometimes beyond mercy. This is the dramatic story of a handful of such people. The Volunteers.

Story
It was in 1943. On the Black Sea, the Russians were fighting a desperate battle to regain control. But the Russians’ one real weakness was on the water: whatever they did, the Germans did it better, and the daring hit-and-run tactics of the E-boats plagued them. At last the British agreed to send them a small flotilla of motor torpedo boats under the command of John Devane. Devane had been in the Navy since the outbreak of war.

Story
Hong Kong, 1941... To the residents and defence forces of the Crown Colony of Hong Kong, the war in Europe remains remote. Even the massive build-up of Japanese forces on the Chinese border cannot dent their carefree optimism. Yet one man suspects the truth. Lieutenant-Commander Esmond Brooke, captain of HMS Serpent and a veteran of the cruel Atlantic, sees all too clearly the folly and incompetence of Hong Kong’s colonial administration. To Brooke, attack by Japan seems inevitable.

The year: 1943. Now there was to be no more retreat for Britain and her Allies. At last the war was to be carried into enemy territory. And from captured bases and makeshift harbours in North Africa, the Royal Navy's Special Force was to be the probe and the spearhead of the advance. To this unorthodox war came the corvette H. M. S. Thistle and her commanding officer, John Crispin.

Adriatic, 1940s... Curtis was the pro. He could steer a sub through a saloon and no one would notice. Duncan was the grumbler, more at home in the Aussie Outback than twenty fathoms under the Adriatic. Jervis was the spit-and-polish man, who knew the correct way to die. And George, the Cockney, was the toughest of them all. Four men in the Royal Navy’s smallest sub, preparing the way for history’s largest invasion.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Story
When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Great Sub warfare with a unique sub.
Another one of Douglas Reeman's great books set during the fall of Singapore. Like most of his books there is quite an interesting cast of people that draws you in and keeps you quite invested, or at least it did for me.

I love this guys work
Would you consider the audio edition of Strike from the Sea to be better than the print version?
About the Same I've listen to Strike form the Sea and have read it.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The Captain of the Sub. He's like most of Mister Reeman's main character's haunted by war, but understands he has a job to do.
Have you listened to any of David Rintoul’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He read all of Mister Reeman's books he's one of the best.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
You shouldn't have joined if you can't take a Joke. (From another Book)
Any additional comments?
This is not my favorite Douglas Reeman book. My fav is Sunset it's set in Hong Kong weeks before and after WWII in the Pacific starts. Strike From the Sea is one three books set in the Pacific before during and after the Japanese attack. He catches the arrogance, the wishful thinking, the slow dawning that a way of life is coming to an end as the Japanese advance. One is set in Hong Kong the other two are set in Singapore, any WWII buff will know what train wreck that was. His other WWII books are set in the Atlantic and the Med and show the cold, grim, dirty horror of the killing grounds of the North Atlantic, Atlantic, and sunny killing grounds of The Med. Give him a try.

silent but not finished
If you could sum up Strike from the Sea in three words, what would they be?
interesting, exciting, incomplete
Did David Rintoul do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
yes, the chracters are a distinct bunch , no two alike,
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
to be continued
Any additional comments?
just seemed to wrap it up in the end to finish the story in time.

REEMAN NEVER FAILS TO ENTERTAIN
Someone commented that Reeman wrote the same story again and again and I have to admit that seems to be true, but it's also pleasant to cruise known waters. The heroine in this novel was different but similar, and the other characters likewise seemed to have walked in from the pages of an earlier story. It was a relief that the ship - submarine - in this story was not crippled, aged, flawed/rusted or destined for the wreckers, and was in fact a cool French mega-sub with lots of space to swing a crew. That made it much more interesting. If you like Reeman you won't be disappointed at all.

A French Navy historical novel of WW II
A genre rarely seen about foreign forces in WW II done in english. Uniquely, it is set on a rare, large submarine out in the colonies of the French Empire as Paris fell & some french continued to fight on.
