About this listen

For fans of Stand by Me and Stranger Things. Devil’s Backbone dirt road weaves through tall East Texas trees. The eerie Claymore mansion sits silently along the path. Thirteen-year-old Kevin Bishop and friends plan to spend their summer swimming, playing baseball, and erecting a massive fort in the nearby woods. Their daily journey requires a bike ride down that road and by that mansion—the site of a gruesome unsolved murder near the turn-of-the-century. They stumble upon evidence to solve the mystery as unforeseen adversaries make this a summer they’ll never forget. This coming-of-age tale will take listeners down memory lane with plenty of suspense to keep you listening. This was the time when kids drank from hoses, arena rock ruled, and cutoff jeans were normal attire. The sleepy little town of Mead Creek never expected a summer like the one of 1979.

Not what I expected.

I actually liked this book more then I thought I would. The author I thought wrote this book really well. The characters acted their age and when the narrator was reading I felt it. Some authors I find don't always do this really well.
It does start of slow but it builds up.
I would highly recommend this book. If you liked stand by me then you'll love this one.

Impressive! Nostalgic! Great book!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I do give honest reviews whether I like them or not and let me say I really enjoyed this book. I try to be fair when I get a free copy and point out good things about a book(still mention what I didn’t like), but still try not to pander because it was free. This book was exceptional in my opinion. I enjoy coming of age books that take me back to my childhood and this is up there with summer of night, it and boys life for that feel that makes you remember what it’s like to be you g again.

Summer of ‘79

A step back into 1979... when kids hung out with their friends all day, built forts, rode their bikes everywhere, and were just kids.

The big old haunted mansion, where a triple homicide had occurred decades ago, was on the path to the perfect location to build a fort. A group of friends needed to pass it quite regularly and they became interested in learning about the local history. Their summer took an unexpected twist when they made a discovery that just might be the key to solving the murders.

Darren Sapp did a fantastic job of transporting me back to my childhood. A real trip down memory lane! Eddie Frierson’s narration was also fantastic.

Great Mystery for teens and adults

This was a blast from the past and so much fun to read. It was kind of like a teenage group of little rascals on bikes trying to solve an over 60 year old cold case murder of a family in their town. Other then the gruesome description of the murders it was a very clean book and we'll written book. I would feel comfortable letting my middle school aged kids read this one and I think they would enjoy it too.

The narration was top notch as well, he really made it fun to listen with his acting skills.

Refreshing

I received this book in exchange for a review for free. I really enjoyed it. It reminded me some of the body , group of kids in the summer of 79’ are trying to solve cold case of murdered family that happened decades ago in their small town. I don’t want to give to much away. Other than it was very entertaining and it was nice to finally listen to a story that wasn’t filled with unnecessary vulgar language every other word. It was definitely worth the listen and will probably relisten again at later point in time which is something I rarely do unless I really liked the story.

Wonderful Summer

Summer of '79 Kindle Edition
by Darren Sapp

This coming of age, murder mystery took me back in time. I was a decade older than the kids in this book, but I found them realistic. I appreciated the clean language and great story line.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Eddie Frierson brought each character to life.

Enjoyable read

My first read from author Darren Sapp. The narrator did a fine job and the accompanying sound effects added to the book's enjoyment. I was provided this free review copy audiobook by the author & am voluntarily reviewing it. An enjoyable, nostalgic read/listen I enjoyed the mystery & will definitely read more by him. No sound effects please

This story lives up to the claims of the synopsis: A mild mystery involving some delightful teenage sleuths. Eddie Frierson performs well, but I could have done without the sound effects. This is an easy, light listen.
