About this listen

Inspiring lessons learned from a lifetime of honor, service, and leadership from Captain Brett Crozier, the former commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and renowned Navy officer.

Amid one of the darkest times in American history, it was a moment that captured the attention of the nation. Brett Crozier, captain of the most powerful and prestigious aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, walked off his ship for the last time while thousands of his sailors saluted and chanted his name in admiration.

This remarkable moment occurred after Crozier made the decision to try to protect his sailors by pleading with his superiors for help when COVID-19 swept through the vessel. Two days later, he was relieved of command.

Now, Crozier reflects on his life, career, and commitment to doing the right thing in a book that celebrates the power of kindness, the importance of teamwork, and the value of standing up for what you believe in. Through a series of “engaging and candid” (Proceedings magazine) stories set all around the world, Crozier takes us on the grand adventures of his extraordinary career and introduces the incredible people he met along the way.

From his days as fighter pilot facing near-death experiences to commandeering suspected pirate vessels in the Persian Gulf, and of course, seizing any opportunity to enjoy one of his favorite hobbies—surfing—Crozier distills the lessons he has learned and the principles that have guided him, showing how you can apply them to your personal and professional life.

Every Sailor Must Read

Captain Crozier embodies the leadership qualities that every Sailor should aspire to replicate. These stories carry lessons of every day occurrences in the Navy and showcase personal and professional growth, responsibility and “Sailor First, Mission Always” mentality. The Navy lost an incredible leader in Captain Crozier. I’m glad he wrote this; I cannot recommend this book enough.

Review for “Surf”

Great book, Well written. Didn’t want it to end. Takes a good, tenacious and committed man to overcome any bureaucracy. Captain Crozier did, and I respect him for doing so. His family is very fortunate to have him. He will always be there for them.

Excellent listen

A truly captivating and sincere memoir of important leadership lessons that are relevant well beyond the military domain. Aside from the lessons alone, the stories behind each lesson are interesting and will keep your attention.

Solid life lessons well told

Captain Crozier packs many solid leadership and life lessons illustrated with stories from his career and does so without pretense, instilling them with integrity and authenticity. I wish more leaders were like him, and I hope that I can embody more of these lessons.

Captain Crozier narrates the book well when speaking in his voice and shows that he isn't a professional when not. I still walked away feeling like I was listening to a mentor.

Take Care of Your Sailor

As a Senior Enlisted Leader in the United States Navy with over two decades of service, I found "Surf When You Can" by Captain Bret Crozier to be an inspiring and deeply resonant read. Crozier's narrative is a compelling blend of personal anecdotes, leadership insights, and practical advice that any military leader, particularly those in the Navy, can appreciate and apply.

The most important message that resonated with me throughout the book was the emphasis on "Take care of your Sailors." Crozier's stories consistently highlight the significance of putting the welfare and development of Sailors at the forefront of leadership. This principle aligns closely with my experiences and beliefs. The success of any mission or command hinges on the well-being, motivation, and professional growth of its personnel. Crozier’s examples of compassionate leadership, where he prioritized the needs and morale of his crew, serve as powerful reminders of our responsibilities as leaders.

Another key takeaway from Crozier’s experiences is the joy and fulfillment found in continuing to serve because you genuinely enjoy leading Sailors. His passion for leadership and dedication to his team are palpable throughout the book. This is particularly inspiring for someone like me, who has dedicated a significant portion of my life to leading and mentoring within the Navy. Crozier’s journey underscores that genuine leadership is not just a duty but a privilege and a source of immense personal satisfaction.

"Surf When You Can" is more than just a collection of leadership tips; it is a testament to the enduring values of empathy, resilience, and commitment. Crozier’s reflections encourage leaders at all levels to stay connected to their purpose and to find joy in the everyday act of leading and supporting their teams.

For anyone in the military or in any leadership role, this book is a must-read. It reinforces the timeless truth that taking care of your people is the foundation of effective leadership and that the greatest reward in any career is the opportunity to lead and inspire others. Captain Crozier’s experiences and insights will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on how you view leadership and service.
