About this listen

In Bloomsbury, London, Inspector Brook of Scotland Yard looks down at a dismal scene. The victim of a ruthless murder lies burnt beyond recognition, his possessions and papers destroyed by fire. But there is one strange, yet promising, lead - a lead which suggests the involvement of a skier.

Meanwhile, piercing sunshine beams down on the sparkling snow of the Austrian Alps, where a merry group of holidaymakers are heading towards Lech am Arlberg. Eight men and eight women take to the slopes, but as the CID scrambles to crack the perplexing case in Britain, the ski party is soon to become 16 suspects.

Easiest on to follow

I liked the way the author broke up all the characters into small easily followed groups.
After struggling to reset my detective reading brain back several decades to enjoy this writing
style- this novel did it for me. I had tried several Lorac books and was so done with 'em
when I found this in my Not Started library.
Skiing not an interest so but I started and was
hooked rightcaway. Whew, I can read a few fine oldies so- if some of these seem to drag...
keep trying till.you fine the one that captures you. Thanks to the work of the British Library
staff and Audible. And I love the intro to each book that teachrs us the art of the slow 'tec novel.

Good old fashioned mystery.

Like Lorac’s books. Glad they are being put in Audible. Odd how cultural and social conditions are echoed today!

An interesting setting and tracking of the criminal

Ms. Carnac/ Lorac demonstrates excellent writing, as usual. I had only listened to the MacDonald books before, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, I enjoyed Rivers as the primary investigator, as well. The skiing setting was very enjoyable and interesting, even to appealing to me as a non-skier. David Thorpe, as always, does an excellent job narrating.

post war London and a ski trip to Austria

When a murderer escapes London and hides in a ski group in Austria, Inspector Rivers tracks him down. This police procedural is beautifully voiced by Thorpe. I enjoyed the author's writing style and pacing. Highly recommended

Absolutely loved

Great crime classic, love the snowy setting. Having a ski group contain a murderer is just the best

Cozy mystery

I’m a fan of E.C.R Lorac so knew I would enjoy this. I’m an even bigger fan of David Thorpe. He did a good job as the narrator. I’m sure it was a challenge with so many characters but he hit the nail on the key ones.

Great Tale Whether Your a Skier or Not

This book is on a number of “Best Mysteries” of all time. It is a tightly written tale of logical thinking by Scotland Yard and the amateur sleuths. The one thing that detracted from the performance was the narrator’s irritating female voices.

Terrible narrator

This narrator makes every female character sound whiny or shrill. This isn't the first book where I've had that problem with this narrator. He really shouldn't be doing this as a career.

Disappointing

The narrator’s silly falsetto voices for women and generally forced delivery. The story doesn’t seem to be particularly well written either.
