Publisher's summary

"Reads like a true crime novel" (Food Safety News)

In a world where irrigation water is contaminated by run-off from cattle feedlots and where food processors cut corners, the food preparation skills we learned from our parents and grandparents are no longer good enough to keep us safe.

Using a variety of foodborne disease outbreaks, often illustrated with the stories of individual victims, Tainted explores the ways in which food becomes contaminated. Some of the stories - such as the deadly 1993 Jack in the Box outbreak - will be very familiar. Others will not.

In this update to her 2007 book, Food Safety: Old Habits, New Perspectives, Phyllis Entis draws on nearly five decades of experience to explain how our regulatory systems have failed us, and to explore what can be done to protect consumers from unsafe food.

A must read for anyone involved in food preparatio

If you’re looking for information on how to keep your family safe from food-borne illnesses, this is the book for you. The author is an expert at her trade and has loaded this book with helpful information. She takes us through many examples of food-borne disasters, using details of the situation in an almost story-like manner. You won’t find thrill-packed adventures, for that you’ll need to check out her Damien Dicken’s mystery series, but the stories definitely held my attention. I highly recommend anyone responsible for food safety, whether it be a family or a business, listen to this book. The author does a great job narrating the book, which I found helpful because some of those words are difficult to pronounce.

Those pesky microbes

I originally read this book on my Kindle, but it's always a different experience to hear it. This is the first non-fiction piece to which I've listened, If you're a fan of fiction audio, do not expect the same diversity of voice. I found the author's narrative work easy to listen to and understand, she has a pleasant voice. I appreciate the thoroughness of Entis as she lays out the evolution of food safety over the last 50 years. There is a lot of information to absorb, but it's explained in a way such that you don't need a degree to understand it. I liked the examples that explained how officials figured out the source of contamination - quite interesting!
