About this listen

Mercedes Lackey's triumphant return to the bestselling world of Valdemar, Take a Thief reveals the untold story of Skif - a popular character from Lackey's first published novel, Arrows of the Queen.

Skif was an orphan who would have died from malnutrition and exposure if he had never met Deke the pickpocket.

By the time he was twelve, Skif was an accomplished cat burglar.

But it wasn't until he decided to steal a finely tacked-out white horse, which was, oddly enough, standing unattended in the street, that this young thief discovered that the tables could turn on him-and that he himself could be stolen!

Great!

The story of an orphan who finds himself like Oliver Twist to become a thief apprentice. He takes to the life with glee until tragedy strikes.

It was fun listening to a story I've read.

I like most of the Valdamar world stories. I laughed at some of the scenes I remembered reading years ago. They were just as funny.

The plus side is that these are fun stories.

Down side is that the character depth through out the stories varies. This was one of the better ones.

👍🏻

What a tale. I like all the practicalities. And instead of saying hungry the last meal had "gone thin." Good writing

Engaging Story

This story is a fun way to understand about what makes a good thief. And, really is about what any good hearted soul wants, which is fellowship. Was such a good story that I listened every minute possible. Definitely recommend!

Intriguing.

I definitely enjoyed. the twist and turns had been worried about Skif. I am glad I was wrong and all worked out well with some great lessons on life.

Where are our Heralds?

That’s all. The place for our thieves and honorable ‘traitors,’ the place of those who have sense? The recognizable ones? Those grounded in the good of the many, working for us all? Of course we’re here, but where’s the magic we need? Where does that come from, dear, now, when we need it so desperately?

Surprised

I liked the reader. I didn’t expect to. I liked the way he pronounced some words, different than I do, but I eventually decided his way was better. Easy voice to listen to.

One of my favorites

The story of Skif is an intriguing tale that goes from the slums of Valdamar to the Queen's court. it follows a young thief as he is chosen through his hilarious choosing, to the nail biting ending where he shows his true strength and character as a hero. After reading it numerous times, having it read to me while I am otherwise engaged is an absolute pleasure. Thank you, Audible.
