All six Tales of the City novels available in one audio edition with a special introduction by the author.

Armistead Maupin's uproarious and moving Tales of the City novels have earned a unique niche in American literature, not only as matchless entertainment but as indelible documents of cultural change in the '70s and '80s.

Among the cast of this groundbreaking saga are the lovelorn residents of 28 Barbary Lane: the bewildered but aspiring Mary Ann Singleton; the libidinous Brian Hawkins; Mona Ramsey, still in a'60s trance; Michael "Mouse" Tolliver, forever in bright-eyed pursuit of Mr. Right; and their marijuana-growing landlady, the indefatigable Mrs. Madrigal.

The first five volumes of the series are presented in one package, read by author. Although it is lightly abridged, all the important remain and makes for a wonderful binge. Follow the exploits of the residents of 28 Barbary Lane through the up and downs of San Francisco in the 1970's and 80's.

Tale of the City Five Volume Binge!

It was a great experience, was able to imagine all the characters as they appear on the scene.

Love the collection

Maupin's Tales of the City is a great collection of stories in 1970s San Francisco. The cast of characters is delightful!

A lovely look back

What bigger treat could there be than to listen to Armie (can we call him that?) narrate this lively series of stories.

I'd previously only read some of the columns published in the Chronicle, and then watched the miniseries created from it (long live Olympia Dukakis as Mrs. Madrigal.

I was enjoying everything just fine till I noticed that each book was read in just a few hours, which seemed short for the size of the printed versions. Checking books out of the library, I then found that in fact, the version(s) here is abridged - with no indication about that in the posted information. While what's left is certainly enough to provide the gist of the stories, the parts cut out did add much flavor and texture to the books.

Also, while there are six books contained in this package, and the actual books have individual names with individual chapter titles, none of that information is conveyed in the Chapters listing. Everything just gets a sequential chapter number so that one doesn't really know what book and chapter is being read.

Possibly minor complaints for such a monumentally narrated work, but they do impact the understanding and enjoyment.

Abridged without warning

i dont think this is the total unabridged version, i coukd have the movies and books messed up but it was lovely to visit Bauberry lane again.

I read these books in college, and again when I moved to NYC. Always an enjoyable friend to revisit from time to time. At nearly 60 now, I can’t believe these stories have been with me for nearly 40 years. Enjoy!!

An Old Friend

All of my wonderful friends from TotC and lovingly read by the author. But I have never been a fan of abridged books and this is abridged. I am missing all of the delicious details. The book skims the surface of the tales and leaves me feeling not quite satisfied.

Beware: abridged!

I do love the books, but I felt this series left too much out.

A good synopsis of the books. Kind of like a movie version. I did enjoy that it was read by the author. For even more quirky laughs it's best to read the books.
