About this listen

All six Tales of the City novels available in one audio edition with a special introduction by the author.

Armistead Maupin's uproarious and moving Tales of the City novels have earned a unique niche in American literature, not only as matchless entertainment but as indelible documents of cultural change in the '70s and '80s.

Among the cast of this groundbreaking saga are the lovelorn residents of 28 Barbary Lane: the bewildered but aspiring Mary Ann Singleton; the libidinous Brian Hawkins; Mona Ramsey, still in a'60s trance; Michael "Mouse" Tolliver, forever in bright-eyed pursuit of Mr. Right; and their marijuana-growing landlady, the indefatigable Mrs. Madrigal.

The first five volumes of the series are presented in one package, read by author. Although it is lightly abridged, all the important remain and makes for a wonderful binge. Follow the exploits of the residents of 28 Barbary Lane through the up and downs of San Francisco in the 1970's and 80's.

I read these books in college, and again when I moved to NYC. Always an enjoyable friend to revisit from time to time. At nearly 60 now, I can’t believe these stories have been with me for nearly 40 years. Enjoy!!

I really enjoyed the development of characters. Sadly, in the final book in this it was clear that the author was struggling for content but even with that, it was a great series of books that I enjoyed completely.

Loved it!

Listen to this collection only if you’ve already heard or read the unabridged versions. It’s great as a refresher if you haven’t read the books in a long while, but a lot of important moments are missing, namely ‘Michael’s Letter to Mama’ from ‘More Tales...’ A great collection, but this shouldn’t be your introduction to 28 Barbary Lane.

Great as a refresher, not as an introduction
