About this listen

Reunited by a grave robber and a corpse, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn is trying to determine the identity of a murder victim, while Officer Jim Chee is arresting Smithsonian conservator Henry Highhawk for ransacking the sacred bones of his ancestors.

But with each peeled-back layer, it becomes shockingly clear that these two cases are mysteriously connected - and that others are pusuing Highhawk, with lethal intentions. And the search for answers to a deadly puzzle is pulling Leaphorn and Chee into the perilous arena of superstition, ancient ceremony, and living gods.

Typical Hillerman greatness

I so enjoy 'reading' mysteries that challenge my brain and allow me to escape. Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee allow me to do this.

I very much enjoyed the story. Christian Baskous did a good job as narrator.

Great Narration.

Enjoyed the Narrator, but had a little trouble with the story plot. Struggled to finish.

Narration is bad and distracting

This isn't my favorite Hillerman book, the plot is a little convoluted. But the narration was so bad that I stopped part way through and priced the Kindle book just to see if it would be worth it so that I could stop listening. There is no consistency in the voices, everyone sounds similar but the same character sounds different each time. Everyone seems whiny. I finally put it on 1.2 speed just to finish it.

Another Great Mystery

This is another wonderful story from Tony Hillerman. If you had read any of the other novels in the series you know exactly what to expect. It also follows the trend of character development that has started to increase since around People of Darkness and The Dark Wind. It isn't a bad thing at all, but you can see more time devoted to it in each novel.

There are two versions of this novel on Audible. This one and another narrated by George Guidall who narrates almost all the others. I recommend the other version if you are working through the series. Christian Baskous does a good job giving each character a unique voice, but it is an abrupt change after several novels. The one thing that really stands out is the Navajo accent he uses for Jim Chee and Joe Leephorn, which sounds at more of an attempt at Irish.

Don’t judge the book by the narrator

A good story by Tony Hillerman with both Lt Leaphorn and officer Jim Chee, but the narration is so unpleasant and distracting.

Love Cher and Leaphorn & T Hillerman

Overall I liked the premise but needed/wanted more detail. I also did not care for this narrator - character differences, overall “voice”. Love to get this again with more chapters and a different narrator.

Navajo Nation lives

Any additional comments?

All of Tony Hillerman's books about the Navajo land are good. This one brings Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee to the Nation's capital to find out why a body appears in Navajo Land that traces back to Washington D.C. Neither are happy to be away from the Sacred Mountains. The narrator does okay but he isn't George Guidall. I heard most of these stories read by Guidall and it really spoils you. The story is very good . . . the narrator leaves much to be desired. It's hard to tell who is talking because most of the voices sound the same . . . maybe a southern drawl but the sound is the same.
