Publisher's summary

The first in a new in-depth nonfiction series examining the devastating terrorist attacks that changed the course of history from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jack Carr and Pulitzer Prize finalist James M. Scott, beginning with the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Beirut.

1983: the United States Marine Corps experiences its greatest single-day loss of life since the Battle of Iwo Jima when a truck packed with explosives crashes into their headquarters and barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. This horrifying terrorist attack, which killed 241 servicemen, continues to influence US foreign policy and haunts the Marine Corps to this day.

Now, the full story is revealed as never before by Jack Carr and historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist James M. Scott. Based on comprehensive interviews with survivors, extensive military records, as well as personal letters, diaries, and photographs, this is the authoritative account of the deadly attack.

Very informative

Master storytelling about a subject that has faded from many memories. I always enjoy Ray Porters ability to tell a story.

Impeccable Research

If you are looking for the “Terminal List “. This isn’t that . I am a big fan of Jack Carr and his ability to bring a story to life by dropping you right into the landing zone right alongside his characters.

I give it an overall rating of 4 starts because Targeted: Beirut is a departure from other titles by this author.

Target Beirut has been well researched as evidenced by the numerous quotes from news articles. I fact the book reads like a summary of a series of military after action reports , journalists editorials , and news of the period.

That aside, Targeted Beirut is an accounting of important pivotal moments in history. The bombing of the embassy occurred at a time in my life when my attention was diverted by school , life and generally at an age when I was still HUA.

I was enthralled by the knowledge gained from the book. I, as always, enjoyed how Jack Carr brought the history and characters stories to life through his exceptional story telling ability . I appreciate the knowledge I have attained.

most intense book ever

I was 15/16 in 1983, I remember some of this, but my god the book filled in all the details. I cried twice at the thought of those young marines being killed just a few years older than me at the time. the thought of the marines having to dig through the devastation to find their brothers is heart breaking. as usual I'm disgusted by our clueless government. Jack Carr is awesome.

Excellent explanations

An outstanding book. These authors took a very complicated corner of the world and explained it, such that we can have context for the decisions, mistakes, and tragedies of 1983. They also did a masterful job of humanizing the stories of the Marines who were there.

Historic perspectives matter less we experience first evers far too often. I commend this to all aspiring policy makers and future leaders.

Fantastic book

A great non fiction book. It’s amazing how Carr & Scott told the story through the lens of real people’s experiences.

Great book

Care’s best work by far. Cleared a lot of misunderstanding up for me.Those poor marines, sailors and soldiers in the meat grinder for political bull shit. Once a shit hole always a shit hole. Terrible way to treat air armed forces. I had not a clue Regan pussied out! Great work Master Chief!

Sobering and intriguing..

As a Beirut era marine, the story brings back a lot of memories from that time, much different place for the United States Marine Corps. Great job.
