Story
A great safari comes to Africa to make a movie, struggling across the veldt and through the jungle in great ten-ton trucks, equipped with all the advantages of civilization. But now it is halted, almost destroyed by the poisoned arrows of the savage Bansuto tribe. There is no way to return. Ahead lies the strange valley of diamonds, where hairy gorillas live in their town of London on the Thames, ruled by King Henry the Eighth. And behind them comes Tarzan of the Apes with the Golden Lion, seeking the man who might have been his twin brother in looks—though hardly in courage!

Story
Billy Byrne is a low class American born in Chicago's ghetto. He grows up a thief and a mugger. "Billy was a mucker, a hoodlum, a gangster, a thug, a tough." He is not chivalrous nor kind, and has only meager ethics - never giving evidence against a friend or leaving someone behind. When falsely accused of murder, he flees to San Francisco and is shanghaied aboard a ship. The ship's secret mission is soon enacted - the hijacking of a specific yacht to take a millionaire's daughter, Barbara Harding, for ransom.

Enlightening story!
I wanted to hear the "roots" of the Tarzan mythos and this dud not disappont! The narrator took some getting used to. It felt like someone's dad who had flunked out if Harvard, but finished at Brown, had had a few Manhattans and was telling a bedtime story.

The ending is very abruptl
But I guess Burroughs understood the idea of a sequel.
After all these years of Tarzan movies and TV shows, it was nice to read the original.

Outstanding story, terrible performance
The story is classic every American should read. Unfortunately, the reader was awful. His voice was entirely too deep and without proper inflection between characters. I had to turn down the bass in my stereo to properly hear the reader. The reader poorly read the sentences as though it was his first time reading the story.

The story is cool, the Narrator it was atrocious
I've always wanted to read this book, but never found the time. It is not what you see in the movies. There's a lot of fun listening to it, seeing the differences of what I've seen before. I can see how this became such a popular series back in the day.
Warning: Alan Munro is a horrid narrator pausing at the wrong times, his accents are terrible, he sounds like a computer more than a person. Get a different version of this. Without him being the narrator!
You have been warned! This is my second book with him, they're both this bad, and I've read both of the books!
