Publisher's summary

A thrilling, sexy coming-of-age story exploring toxic love, ruthless ambition, and shocking betrayal, Tell Me Lies is about that one person who still haunts you - the other one. The wrong one. The one you couldn't let go of. The one you'll never forget.

Lucy Albright is far from her Long Island upbringing when she arrives on the campus of her small California college and happy to be hundreds of miles from her mother, whom she's never forgiven for an act of betrayal in her early teen years. Quickly grasping at her fresh start, Lucy embraces college life and all it has to offer - new friends, wild parties, stimulating classes. And then she meets Stephen DeMarco. Charming. Attractive. Complicated. Devastating.

Confident and cocksure, Stephen sees something in Lucy that no one else has, and she's quickly seduced by this vision of herself and the sense of possibility that his attention brings her. Meanwhile, Stephen is determined to forget an incident buried in his past that, if exposed, could ruin him, and his single-minded drive for success extends to winning, and keeping, Lucy's heart.

Alternating between Lucy's and Stephen's voices, Tell Me Lies follows their connection through college and postcollege life in New York City. Deep down, Lucy knows she has to acknowledge the truth about Stephen. But before she can free herself from this addicting entanglement, she must confront and heal her relationship with her mother - or risk losing herself in a delusion about what it truly means to love.

With the psychological insight and biting wit of Luckiest Girl Alive and the yearning ambitions and desires of Sweetbitter, this keenly intelligent and staggeringly resonant novel chronicles the exhilaration and dilemmas of young adulthood and the difficulty of letting go, even when you know you should.

Kept waiting for it to get better

This genre is my jam but this story was not. Lucy was an infuriating main character and so desperately pathetic it was a struggle to follow along at times. There were too many stupid moments that made me roll my eyes. But I recognize it was quality writing by the author to make me feel such strong dislike towards a fictional character so I’m caught at 3 stars

great book

I started watching the show on Hulu, and yes the book is different but sooooo good. I seen the bad reviews but gave it a try anyways and I was not disappointed I wish there were more books but it was a good one.

So much better than the previous reviewers let on

Also so much better than the new series. I hate when they change the storyline or fail to deliver the complexity of a story. If I were to go based on the series, I would of hated Lucy the “Ice Queen” and what’s with them killing off the Dad’s?! Placing Macy in college, giving Wrigley a brother, and giving away scenes/events that happened to Lucy to Diana or Diana in general?! It’s like a completely different story than the book. It’s extremely frustrating.

Anyway, the book is good. The ending seems unfinished and rushed. I would of liked a different ending. I think the dynamics of Lucy & Stephen are relatable to most girls. Stephen is a real piece of work. I would of liked for the author to deliver on that Lucy was different or that Lucy brought justice to Stephen’s injustice of Macy and mistreatment of the other girls. As is, it seems kinda pointless and I can see why it received such reviews.

Hulu is better. I wanted to smack these characters.

Ok soooo don’t waste your time. Hulu had me excited about this but they are changing the story A LOT from this book. This book is about 2 narcissistic people who basically deserve each other but can’t see past their own reflection, needs and wants to be A) with each other and B) nice to the people around them.

There was really no growth in this book, no emotions other than their neediest to their self-value. There was a final statement at the end she see what she is to him. Ya duh. Anyone and everyone saw that. But she doesn’t really grow from that realization. Or maybe from the way the character is set up it just didn’t hit home enough?

Also lots of comments on appearance - “he’s fat” etc. felt weird. Like she’s trying to show how unattractive he is but his “charm” wasn’t very charming. Idk didn’t connect. It was just all portrayed very shallow or short in emotion/description.

Underwhelming

I read this because I watched the Hulu show and loved it. I was disappointed to (for once) like the show more than the book. I wish she added more about Macie in the plot and I was underwhelmed by the ending. I do appreciate her shedding light into the brain of someone with an antisocial personality disorder as well as an eating disorder. Overall, I wouldn’t read this again but would recommend it to anyone who is watching the show.

So much better than the Hulu series

I watched the series 1st and it left me with so many questions. Books usually go into way more detail and are way more satisfying. This book did not disappoint.

Love hate relationship

So many reviews are poor about this book because the characters were so “unlikable”….I think that was the whole point. This book made me so angry every time I read it and it’s only because it brought me to my own experiences with men and myself, in the past, when I was a young adult. Lucy, a young naïve adolescent, transitioning into young adulthood, learns about friendships, love, sex and manipulation. All while struggling with body image, depression and finding herself. These are ALL things young adults struggle with and learn to cope with. I hated Stephen, but that’s only because I, myself have had similar experiences with men who made me question myself and my self worth, who have manipulated me and took advantage of my kindness. So even though the characters were “unlikeable”, the experiences these characters went through in the story were very much relatable to the young adulthood population.

I expected more

I saw the Hulu show and thought I’d read the books to get a deeper understanding of the story. BIG mistake I hate the main characters even more then I thought possible especially Steven. It was a slow burn of disgust and horror I never disliked main characters as I did in this book. They have no redeeming qualities. I hate the book but I forced myself to continue to listen to it.
