Surprised and rewarded.

I love historical fiction and was dubious that a romance novel could live up to the rigor of the research required. I was not only impressed with the research of daily community life, but loved the point of view of the women during the turbulent years of the Civil War. Ms. McAdoo beautifully captures the day to day social mores of the time from a woman’s perspective with a simplicity and honesty that makes what could be insipid, believable and touching. However, the narrator is the true hero here. Ms. Windsor enhances that believability with a commitment to the era and her characters that allows the reader to accept and honor the era, the men and women who lived, loved and thrived in that time. While it is romanticized, the author’s point of view of “a woman’s place” as being fulfilling is refreshing in this age of overwrought grievance from every walk of life.

Great performance.

This isn't usually a genre I go for, but Cynthia Winsor made it really easy to listen to. Her portrayal of the characters was (I believe) spot on. She has the perfect voice for this genre as well, which makes me want to listen to more of it. I couldn't stop listening!
