Publisher's summary

The stakes are higher than ever before as FBI handler Meg Jennings and her K-9 partner, Hawk, race to find survivors after a building collapses in Sara Driscoll's gripping, timely new mystery featuring a K-9 search-and-rescue unit in Washington, D.C. For friends of harder-edged crime fiction by authors like Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot, Iris Johansen, and Robert Krais.

There are situations that fill even the most seasoned FBI K-9 handlers with shock and horror. Meg Jennings is preparing for another workday when she gets word of a catastrophic scene in downtown Washington, D.C. Part of a twelve-story condo building has collapsed, and the rest of the structure could soon follow. Every search-and-rescue worker and K-9 team is needed on-site immediately to find survivors—and assess the casualties.

Putting aside her fears for her firefighter fiancé, who's already inside the unstable building, Meg turns to the task at hand. If anyone is still alive within the rubble, she and Hawk, working alongside other K-9 teams, must find them. Every hour, every moment counts—and a wrong move could trigger a deadly chain reaction for those buried beneath. But beyond the present danger is a deeper threat, as evidence indicates that this wasn't a random tragedy, but an act of domestic terrorism. And identifying the culprit and the motivation, in time to stop another attack, means taking on an enemy with terrifying skills—and nothing left to lose.

Yet another ballpark home run

Sara amazes yet again as she brings these much beloved characters to life. I love the tidbits that each chapter brings as a way of educating me as we’re navigated through the story.

Another fine tale in the series

Every tale of Hawk, Meg, and their friends just gets better. I loved the first one and haven’t been disappointed. The suspense and love of animals has been sustained once again and if I had a tail like Hawk it would be wagging furiously with anticipation for the next novel.

Great Story and Details

Poor choice in readers. Monotone and boring reader. Character Kara is just irritating. Otherwise great accurate story.

Tragedy as we all know it.

At first I was thrown back, as I was listening. Tragedy like 911 and The Towers in Florida. The death and destruction, as we were glued to our television sets.
This book was written in that fashion.
Then in the spirit were the author comes in with the FBI teams and reporter.
The who, what and why come out.
With a feel good ending and Christmas.
I made it through this series and really enjoyed her writing. There is another book to purchase. Probably a case and the wedding, which I will listen to with Audible.
Good book, but sad.

Starts slow, like a narration, but worth it!

Starts like a narrative with details and background, so much so you wonder if you can get into this book. A few hours in, the action starts and you will be in tears. You really do need the background to understand what is going on and how hard the search is, how devastating the disaster is, the loss and suffering. It will help you understand how hard these events are on first responders.

More technical than I would have liked

This book is a lot about what the first responders go through in a catastrophic disaster. It seemed real to me though a first responder may disagree. There were some really slow parts but once they had an idea of the perpetrators it got more interesting.

This story was well researched and well written

I’ve enjoyed every book in this series. These books are different from the usual detective or crime stories and the K-9 aspect is always so interesting. Sara Driscoll does not disappoint. I hope there will be more books in this series.

heart wrenching story

These words are always intriguing with you from the beginning, you can’t settle down or turn them off and even though they’re about very difficult subjects they always end in a nice way realistically but you don’t come back from putting the book down, feeling bad you always feel lifted up

Loved it! Really great story!

I really enjoyed this one! I loved getting to come back to this series and get more of Meg, Hawke and her core group/team. I loved seeing Todd again as well as McCord, Cara and Brian. This time around there is a major building collapse of a condo building is the morning and Meg and Hawke are called out to help search for survivors. The rest of her FBI team are called in as well and Meg's fiancé, Todd, is on scene as a firefighter/paramedic. This story pulled me in from beginning to end and had me engaged the entire time. This story is deals with the tough topic of the building going down with so many people still inside and there not being much chance of survival. McCord is also working on the story and digging into how and why the building went down and all the different possibilities and targets for it. I enjoyed this one as it was highly engaging and thrilling as they worked the pile to try and find survivors/remains of all the people while also trying to figure out if it was done on purpose. This story handled the mass casualty/major building collapse very well and while it is emotional there is also a lot of hope and strength as people push forward and risk their lives in the hope for others.
The narrator did a great job with this story and bringing it to life with the characters and emotions as well as the action that was happening. It really brought the story to life.
