Publisher's summary
Acclaimed suspense writer Mary Higgins Clark presents two short stories narrated by her daughter Carol:
"That's the Ticket!"
Ernie and Wilma Bean have finally made it! Their lucky number has won the special Christmas lottery. Wilma is out of town, though, and it's tough to keep news like that a secret for too long. It couldn't hurt to celebrate a little with Loretta Thistlebottom, could it?
"Voices in the Coal Bin"
The country cabin where Mike spent so many idyllic summers with his grandmother ought to be the perfect place for his wife, Laurie, to recover from the nightmares of her childhood. But now that Mike and Laurie have arrived, what could be causing such an ominous feeling to come over both of them?

Story
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Two stories that don'rt belong together
There is a serious tonal dissonance here. Why someone would put these two stories together as a mini collection is beyond me. Especially since Voice in the Coal Bin appears in other collections on audible like "Death Wears a Beauty Mask and Other Stories" and the two never appeared together in a printed collection. It is a weird choice.
That's the Ticket is a light hearted and comedic mystery as a married couple attempts to find a winning lottery ticket. It has a sweetness of two people, long married, and very used to each other's foibles try to solve a problem. It really was a strong story and I liked the audio read and the thrust. It is also a bit of a Christmas story set during the holiday season. It is charming.
Voices in the Coal Bin is a much shorter tale of a young couple dealing with a mental breakdown and trying to recover. There is a sense of decay to the entire story and a darkness to the ending. I found it less satisfying as its brevity doesn't give time to invest with the characters. It does have a wonderful sense of ambiance and the reader does a good job.
Still I don't recommend listening to both stories in one sitting and I feel neither story is Mary Higgins Clark at her best,
