About this listen

Two weeks before Christmas, Dr. Diana Duprey is found floating face-up in a small lap pool in her back yard. A medical doctor with an abortion practice, and a national figure who inspired passion and ignited tempers, she had been the target of violent threats by right-to-life activists. Her husband, Frank Thomson, a lawyer in the district attorney's office, fought bitterly with her on the morning of her murder. To reveal the nature of their argument would cost him his career, and more.

Diana's daughter, Megan, also quarreled with her on the day of her death. The Reverend Stephen O'Connell, founder of the town's outspoken Lifeblood Coalition, had reasons of his own to want Diana's practice shut down, including her involvement with his troubled teenager. The investigation of the case unleashes a flood of secrets in Duprey's small Colorado town, whose residents must face haunting questions, and the accusations of their own consciences.

Critic reviews

"Like Anne Tyler, Hyde captures the quirky, heartbreaking core of a character and puts it on the page in shining prose." (Publishers Weekly)

This book was so much more than a mystery. It explored topics such as abortion, Down's syndrome, child pornography, and more. The narrator was a little over the top and annoying at times.. but the story made you forget her after awhile. I am a little upset that the author left a dangling piece of information about semen in the victim unresolved. But, I will think about this book for a long time.

Above average mystery

I agree with the other reviewers that the narration of this story wasn't well done. The narrator was over the top and annoying, and I almost stopped listening to it a few times even though the story wasn't bad at all.

Good story - bad narration

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me listening and walking to find out what would happen next. Loved the person that narrated.

I found this book to be a disappointment. It had an intriguing premise-a mystery about the murder of an abortion doctor. But the characters were incompletely drawn and in the case of the doctor's daughter, intensely dislikable. In addition, many of the scenes in the book were implausible.

It was engaging enough to want to finish to find out what happened--but overall only a fair mystery story.

I loved this book..interesting characters..good mystery. The last hour gets a tiny bit slow, but at that point I was so into the book it didn't matter to me. I had some trepidation about it because of the subject matter..but it really isn't about abortion, it is just a good murder mystery. I wish there were more books available by this author.

Great mystery

Not a terrible book, yet not a great book. The biggest problem is the narrator. The voice in character is too much. Since this medium is so reliant on the narrator, I tended to miss the content. This is a book that I would probably take out of the library and read myself to form a fairer opinion.

This was an extremely dissapointing book. I expected more from it. It was totally predictable and not at all original. The reader was excellent however. Dont waste your time of credits on this one.
