Publisher's summary

Ex-Chicago cop and new PI Josie Harper has been hired by an outside group to clear the name of publisher Lauren Wade, recently acquitted of the murder of her lover. That means finding the real killer, a task made more difficult by Lauren's unwillingness to cooperate and a large family problem - Lauren's parents have been kidnapped for a ransom she can no longer pay. Josie has a big challenge of her own: how to redeem herself after losing her job as a detective. When Josie and Lauren join forces to rescue the parents, they discover they make a great team in more ways than one. Will Josie's troubled past come back to haunt her? And who did kill Lauren's lover?

A Great Whodunit

The author has you guessing throughout the story. A great read with a bipolar lead character.

The Acquittal

My personal feelings is that this would have been an excellent book if concentration had been on the story, instead of the sex. While I don't mind sex in a book, this was to me too much and the actual story was lost and it was a good one. Tue narration was good.

Good book!

It was a good book. I felt there was some unfinished plot line with the brother and the parents. I liked Josie and valiant efforts to keep her mental illness under control. Lauren was a mystery to me until the very end,

Could have been 5 stars.

I would have given this book 5 out of 5 on everything but I feel like the loose ends weren’t tied tight enough for me.

Even better than a whodunit! A "why"dunit?

What I love about "The Acquittal" (and all of Anne Laughlin's mysteries) is the mix of a murder plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat and the intricate psychological mystery she constructs. What would it take for an average woman (and average lesbian) to do awful things? Or did she?

The effortless flow of Laughlin's writing is spot-on, finding just the right way to draw you deep into the story and sometimes even laugh out loud. Great book for an afternoon on the beach or an evening by the fireplace.

Good Detective Story

I liked this story very much. Narration was great.
As other reviews claimed,so many characters was a bit confusing trying to keep everyone in place.
I liked this story so much im going to listen to it again to place all characters.

Good narration but lousy storyline

Good narration but story didn’t make any sense, the whole story you are going to wonder why nobody has common sense in the book.

want to love a villain?

Josie Harper is a lesbian and has a new job as p.i. Just as she's filling her new office w furniture from Ikea, Sara walks in and hands Josie her first murder case. Who killed Kelly? Lauren Wade, a cool, beautiful blonde has already been tried and acquitted of that murder. Still, something is odd about this cool character. and from there Josie and her cast of characters take us through a tangled and satisfying mystery.
it is hard not to fall for Josie and harder to resist Lauren Wade. I loved it.

Absurd story line

This was a ridiculous, fanciful, unbelievable even for television plot line. The narration equally bad. But... it was an easy enough way to occupy a few non-serious hours. Cop drama, PIs, flawed characters dealing (with varying success) with an assortment of mental illnesses, a little lesbian drama, and a happily ever after of sorts.
