About this listen

Tensions are escalating between England and Napoleon's France. While the Royal Navy launches reconnaissance, rescue missions, and spies on the continent, French privateer ships are lurking in English waters poised to strike at British trade. Would you try another book from Julian Stockwin and/or Christian Rodska?

Yes, absolutely.

What could Julian Stockwin have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not written it. It's like watching a slow-motion train wreck. Stay away from romance. The only character worth reading was thrown over for a simpering, vapid romantic interest. Needless to say, Kydd dug another hole that takes him the NEXT TWO books to dig out of.

What about Christian Rodska’s performance did you like?

Always entertaining. I still think he could make Renzi sound less like a fop.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Never.

Any additional comments?

Really, just skip it. You'll get the whole redux in the first chapter of the next book.

You Can Skip this Book and Miss Nothing (Spoilers)

I enjoyed the book, but find the plot line with Rosalind somewhat contrived, bringing unnecessary complication for the sake of complications alone. The next book will have to show me, if there is a meaning to it.

Fine book, but unnecessary romantic entanglements

I was very disapointed with the ending! Ruined the whole book for me. Will not listen to anymore of this series.

Bad Ending

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Over-dramatic characters that make ridiculous decisions for barely credible reasons that makes Characters thoroughly unlikable. The whole story is just awful.

Ridiculous

the second love interest, just plain unrealistic and awful.
you will know it when you get there but it has ruined a great series I hope it can recover.

one chapter ruined the series so far.

I almost skipped this one after seeing many negative reviews, but very glad I didn’t. The romantic relationship central to the plot is really a subtext to the real theme, which is that of Kydd facing his inner demons. His social ambition comes up against his true and more emotionally naive nature. There is swashbuckling excitement enough, aboard ship, but the treatment of strained relationships, torn loyalties, inner struggles and personal anguish make this one of the most subtle yet most powerfully delivered stories of the series. I found it thoroughly engaging.

Introspective and heart wrenching

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

A bit long and drawn out, but a very worthy read in the series. Lot's more shoreside romance an a bit less action than most of the other books in the series. Well read and a significant debelopment in the series.

A bit long & drawn out.

could people in the early 19th century have been so insecure romantically to take 11 hours of time to get nowhere?

too much romance & insecurity. not enough action

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would only recommend this to fans of the series. You have to listen to it to move the storyline ahead. It was slow moving and pretty boring. The romantic storyline did not seem plausible.

What could Julian Stockwin have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Less high society drama.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Love stories narrated by Christian Rodska.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

Romance

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

More a series of related misadventures than a cohesive novel. Hoping the next one returns to previous form.

Not the best
