About this listen
It may not be an easy journey, but it’s definitely worth the fight—here’s how to help your child with autism survive and thrive in life while taking care of your mental health.
Are you stressed and overwhelmed by the struggles that come with raising a child with autism?
Are you worried about their future, wondering if they can ever become successful?
Has the thought of having a typical kid ever passed your mind because you’re so tired of handling their behavior?
Don’t feel guilty: your feelings are valid. Thousands of parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Asperger’s have the same sentiments.
In fact, raising a neurotypical child is also tough and a struggle every day. Caring for a kid with autism is a bigger challenge, and it can become worse if you don't get the right support and you're not able to provide for all your child's needs.
However, there’s also a silver lining: you get to raise the most honest people in the world. And just like any other kid, children with autism also show great potential—you just have to help them discover and nurture their talents so they can set and achieve their goals.
But before you begin, you need to understand why they behave the way they do.
Fortunately, this guide offers a simple framework with insights and strategies for you to follow and help your child thrive in life. Here’s just a fraction of what you will discover inside:
- The 5-pillar approach to raising a child with special needs
- The largely unknown reason behind the aggressive behavior in autism, and what you can do to prevent it
- How to tell people about your child’s diagnosis–find out how to set boundaries to protect your kid
- Five practical ways to identify talent in a child with autism–and what you can do to help them nurture it
- Verbal, non-verbal, and visual strategies to overcome communication barriers when interacting with an ASD child
- How to deal with their obsessive and repetitive behavior without being hard on them

Essential Resource for Parents and Educators
I have worked with many neurodivergent kids but never anyone on the autism spectrum, so I was happy to discover this book to fill in that knowledge gap. The book does a terrific job of educating the listener about autism generally, the possible roots of seemingly problematic behaviors, and techniques and approaches to dealing with those behaviors specifically and the autistic child generally. Author Audra Mills has extensive experience and has undertaken extensive research, having raised a child on the spectrum. Her expertise comes through.
The book is organized into five pillars: Insights into reasons behind behaviors, approaches to unlocking the child’s potential, tactics for dealing with unpredictable actions, methods to manage stress, and advice on the finances of raising an autistic child. These pillars are not presented chronologically but are weaved into chapters on specific topics such as developing communication skills, handling repetitive behaviors, addressing sleep challenges, and the like. There are many great takeaways, but two stand out for me. First, when a child on the spectrum engages in spectrum-typical behaviors, he is trying to communicate or self-soothe. Second, autism when handled properly need not be a barrier to success: see Elon Musk, Eminem, and Tim Burton among others.

Helpful & informative!
"The Art of Parenting a child with Autism and Asperger's" is a personalized and detailed guide to help parents give their children a full life. While I don't personally have a child with Autism or Asperger's, I can clearly see how this could be an invaluable resource to parents of children with those conditions. The author covers a wide range of information, and goes into great detail on the specific challenges children with Autism or Asperger's face, and more importantly, provides strategies for parents to help manage those challenges.

Solid information
Raising children with neurodivergence, such as ADHD and autism, presents a unique set of challenges and emotional complexities, something I understand well as a mother of two ADHD children and one showing autistic traits. The journey is marked by uncertainties regarding their future and can often be overwhelming, leading to feelings of stress and exhaustion. These experiences are shared by numerous parents facing similar situations, creating a common thread of understanding and empathy. My son is very reclusive once he gets home but the star of the school when he is there. He does not participate in team sports and will not invite any friends over, even won't have a birthday party unless it's just family.I get the struggles and frustration of thinking how your kids will be but then you see the struggle they go through and know you can't change who they are but still want to make sure they develop the skills they need for adulthood.
This book recognizes and validates the struggles of parenting neurodivergent children right from the start. It aims to dismantle the guilt often associated with these challenges, emphasizing that parenting, in any form, comes with its own trials and tribulations.
More than just offering empathy, the book is a source of empowerment, providing parents with valuable insights and effective strategies. It includes inspiring stories of individuals with autism who have achieved great success, underscoring the potential inherent in every child. I think with this book, parents can navigate the often complex terrain of life with a child with autism, helping them to excel and succeed in various endeavors.
