About this listen
As a casting director for 23 years, Holly Powell witnessed the casting world from three different points of view: as an independent casting director, as head of casting for a studio, and as a network casting executive. From this unique perspective she formed Holly Powell Studios, with her mission being to demystify the audition process for actors. Through using her "The 6 Audition Tools Method", actors are guided into adopting the mental focus of the athlete and learn to control sabotaging thoughts that can derail an audition. The Audition Bible: Secrets Every Actor Needs to Know, originally written as a companion piece to Holly's audition workshops, covers not only audition techniques and tools but answers many common questions about audition protocol. Anecdotal audition stories exemplify what works and what doesn't during the casting process.
Part 1: The Audition is a handbook for any actor auditioning for any venue, be it television, film, theater, a commercial, or a webisode. The actor travels through waiting in the lobby, walking into the audition room, the audition itself, the people he encounters in the room, and finally exiting the audition room.
Part 2: Auditioning for a Series-Regular Role guides the actor through the four steps it typically takes to book a series-regular role on a network television series: the pre-read with the casting director, the callback for producers, reading for studio executives, and testing at the network. Even though the format in the second part is specifically geared toward auditioning for television, all actors in every medium will find invaluable information here that will apply to their individual audition circumstances. An audition is an audition is an audition.

Jenna Fischer's Hollywood journey began at the age of 22 when she moved to Los Angeles from her hometown of St. Louis. She was determined, confident, and ready to work hard. So, what could go wrong? Uh, basically everything. The path to being a professional actor was so much more vast and competitive than she’d imagined. It would be eight long years before she landed her iconic role on The Office, nearly a decade of frustration, rejection, and doubt. If only she’d had a handbook for the aspiring actor. Or, better yet, someone to show her the way. Jenna wants to be that person for you.

Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

Mary Tyler Moore made her name as Dick Van Dyke's wife on the eponymous show; she was a cute, unassuming housewife that audiences loved. But when screenwriters James Brooks and Allan Burnes dreamed up an edgy show about a divorced woman with a career, network executives replied: "Americans won't watch television about New York City, divorcées, men with mustaches, or Jews." But Moore and her team were committed, and when the show finally aired, in spite of tepid reviews, fans loved it.

Story
Caddyshack is one of the most beloved comedies of all time, a classic snobs vs. slobs story of working-class kids and the white-collar buffoons that make them haul their golf bags in the hot summer sun. It has sex, drugs, and one very memorable candy bar, but the movie we all know and love didn't start out that way, and everyone who made it certainly didn't have the word classic in mind as the cameras were rolling.

Story
In 1969, Illeana Douglas' parents saw the film Easy Rider and were transformed. Taking Dennis Hopper's words - "That's what it's all about, man" - to heart, they abandoned their comfortable upper-middle-class life and gave Illeana a childhood filled with hippies, goats, free spirits, and free love. Illeana writes, "Since it was all out of my control, I began to think of my life as a movie, with a Dennis Hopper-like father at the center of it." I Blame Dennis Hopper is a rollicking, funny, at times tender exploration of the way movies can change our lives.

Business Owner
I came to LA about 6 years ago. Not to act but since it was available, I played around in Hollywood. I decided to read this all because I'm starting a business. Won't explain here but it just made some type of sense to read this and take my notes in the first week of my llc. It didn't take me long to be able to look back on my "acting" experiences and see all the places I had gone wrong, simply not knowing or having any education/understanding, I took certain things for granted or just didn't show it the respect it deserves. This book from Holly was so eye opening. I'd suggest two options. Do it my way, so you can have a before and after thought(I may go back into acting once I climb out of a little debt). Or, if you are already absolutely sure acting is your role to play in the world, and you don't necessarily have the training or support, read this and have some clue of what you're doing. Like I said, I absolutely did not and I laughed many times thinking back on the way I chose to walk the path. I wonder if anyone has been disgusted by me or has an absolute opinion on working with me in the future. It repeats many times but it is crucial in each step of the way to have a routine knowledge of what is going on at all times. It's educational and grounding. I don't even consider myself an actor although I'd never limit myself, however my point is.. I feel a new vitality and framework in going forward in my endeavors. Thank You, Holly Powell. I hope to see you around, make eye contact and greet you with slight admiration but most of all professionalism and my athletic focus bubble.
V/r,
