About this listen

What is it about the old Wilder Creek Bridge that makes Lewis Barnavelt so curious - and so afraid? When Lewis and his best friend Rose Rita Pottinger set out to explore the bridge and the deserted farm nearby, they discover shocking secrets - and a horrifying monster. Even Lewis's Uncle Jonathan and the magical Mrs. Zimmermann may not be able to vanquish this ferocious creature!

Wonderful

Again the combination of Bellairs and Strickland did not disappoint! It was wonderful to return to the mysterious and magical world of John Bellairs. Happy to see all of Bellairs’s books on Audible!

my favorite narrator

The Bellairs' books are a marvel and contain some parallel magical themes, spells and other devices similar to the HP books - BUT were written before the published HP books - delightful, scary stories and glad Audible has included them in the library. In addition George Guidall is a solid 10 narrator with a range of voices. Bravo !!!!

Pleasant reading, nostalgic feel

Pleasant haunting mystyry - solved by real kids, surrounded by nostalgic details of the 1950s. Like Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew as if told by Susan Cooper. No pretend beast here - real fantastic; nor are the kids imaginary super-sleuths. In fact, the main characters ride bikes and go to church - well, maybe that is unreal. Anyway, the story is not freighted with mega-social messages of societal prejudice and the like. Just plain fun listening.

Lewis Barnavelt meets H. P. Lovecraft

This is an unusual series entry with Lewis and company going up against Lovecraft's Old Ones. Personally, I don't think it works as we might hope.

In my opinion, one of the series weaker entries.
