About this listen

Based on John Bellairs' mystery-adventure series, this thrilling story will keep you on the edge of your seat! John Bellairs, the name in gothic mysteries for middle graders, wrote terrifying tales full of adventure, attitude, and alarm. For years, young listeners have crept, crawled, and gone bump in the night with the unlikely heroes of these gothic novels: Lewis Barnavelt, Johnny Dixon, and Anthony Monday. And this installment by Brad Strickland is no exception!

After Rose Rita Pottinger cuts her finger on an enchanted Egyptian scroll, Lewis must work together with his neighbor Florence and sorcerous uncle Jonathan to rescue Rose Rita from the tomb in which she's imprisoned.

Brad Strickland does a wonderful job of picking up where John Bellairs left off... in the spirit of the series this book is very entertaining... and hard to put down.

great continuation of the series...

Loved the narrator. Loved the story—yes, it’s a kids story but it’s a good read and an enjoyable escape from the harsh realities of the world.

I enjoyed this book as an oldster and imagine I would have loved to read it as a kid. I could easily imagine myself playing the hero like Lewis, without having to buy in to the super-powers thing. Maybe it's not too late; must . find . suitable . museum.

Hard to find a fault - good storytelling

As always a John Bellairs story is always worth your time. This one is a thoroughly good listen. Not my favorite of his many novels but the narration is amazing.

Excellent performance

This is the first Lewis Barnavelt series entry not written at all by John Bellairs. Brad Strickland does a good job of copying the style of the earlier books without repeating them. The series is in good hands.

This time our heroes face a curse thrown upon Rosarita. It works on her, feeding off of teenage angst and self esteem. If they can't free her from this curse, it will be her end.

One of the best things about this series is that it doesn't talk down to the reader. This is scary stuff for younger readers. But, if you can recall, that was the way we all liked it when we were that age. Recommended.

Another solid story, even without Mr Bellairs
