About this listen

A classic fantasy/mystery from critically acclaimed novelist John Bellairs

Lewis thought the amulet would bring him good luck - instead, it brought nothing but evil.

Lewis is sure that Grandpa Barnavelt's 1859 lucky coin is really a magic talisman in disguise. With its power, he could do anything he wanted - like get back at bully Woody Mingo. But as soon as he begins wearing the coin around his neck, strange things start to happen. Mysterious letters arrive in the dead of night. A strange, shadowy figure seems to be tracking him.

And when Lewis finally gets his revenge on Woody, he feels as if someone else is inside his body, urging him to go even further. Has Lewis awakened a force beyond his control?

I just discovered this series and am so glad. This is the second book and it, as was the first book, is well written, interesting and has great character development. The main characters are Uncle John, nephew Lewis, friend Mrs. Zimmerman and Lewis's friend Rosie. They are all fully developed and likable characters. Lewis does tend to cry over much but he is still lovable. In this book Lewis is given a coin that is supposed to be a lucky talisman and he hopes it will help protect him from a bully that is making his life miserable. It is not lucky at all - it is evil and will kill Lewis unless he gets help.

The narrator for these books is George Guidall, who is one of my favorite of all the narrators in the business. His smooth expressive and distinctive voice makes the books extremely enjoyable. He does an equally great job with male and female voices. Putting his great performance together with a well written book is magic. My only complaint about the series so far is that the books are very expensive for their short length. They should be half the price they are selling for and it hurts to use a credit for a 3 to 4 hour book.

Great discovery

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book... there was a good level of mystery and intrigue in this particular story. The characters are well-developed and the action level is sequenced well in the writing. Personally I wasn't impressed with additional profanity in this book as opposed to the first one... just seemed unnecessary. would like to have had chapter titles enunciated also some kind of musical segue between chapters... overall enjoyed listening to this book
