About this listen

They've escaped the Breeders, yet their journey has just begun. Riley and Clay are once again on the run from the Breeders. The group may have escaped the deranged experiments at the hospital, but as one of the world's last free women, Riley can never be safe. On the road back home, Riley and her crew are captured by a band of savage men. Their destination: the Citadel, run by a bizarre religious prophet named the Messiah. Somehow he knows their secrets. He wants them to join his group of Believers, but only if they'll drink the baptismal water and swear allegiance. The problem is that there's something wrong with the water. Something wrong with the people. And there's human moaning coming from the bottom of a dark crevasse that no one wants to talk about. If they can't figure out what''s going on, Riley and everyone she loves could become a Believer forever.

This follow on novel to "The Breeders" series is an improvement over the first novel. Yet,it still has many structural problems and holes. First, the pace of the plot moves way too slow. Second, the plot has way to many answered questions that future novels won't answer. Third, we see a little character development in Riley but the other characters stagnate. For example, French is leading you down one road with Clay (Riley's love interest) and then abruptly does and about-face and sweeps a whole bunch of things under the rug and then moves in a different direction - very jarring.

The truth is, I want to like this series but I can't seem to get there. Yet, I also can't seem to say enough is enough. It's like eating creamed spinach -- it's kind'a good. Mercer-Meyer really needs to pick up the pace of narration. She read s-l-o-w and this is very distracting. The whole thing should be read in 8 hours instead of 10.

This YA novel, I give it a solid sideways thumb.

Series continues to be be Meh

Riveting! Nearly impossible to put down! The words coupled with the narrated version is out standing. I can see the book as a movie in my mind. I've got to have this series by Katie French.

Not as good as the first one, but still glad I listened to it. The last part dragged on a bit but for the most part I liked it.

Creative story, great characters.... Like the narrator. Wondering if there will be a third?

Enjoyed both books

I want the crazy breeders to have a horrible end. I love the characters & the way they interact. The love they have for each other as a family & the lengths they go to against all odds for each other has really moved me. I can't wait til 4 comes out

Amazing series!

Couldn’t stomach it past 30 minutes of the narrator’s voice. It was obviously a forced effort and not done well.

Terrible narrator
