About this listen

Analog Science Fiction & Fact Magazine has provided four edgy stories about heroism, each exploring emotional dimensions uncommon in this or any other genre. The collection is edited by Stanley Schmidt.

"Slow Life" by 2002 Hugo winner Michael Swanwick is a colorful tale of exotic adventure and alien life on Titan.

Nebula Award finalist "The Astronaut from Wyoming" by Adam-Troy Castro and Jerry Oltion is about a boy with a birth defect that makes him look like a tabloid alien, but who nevertheless wants to be an astronaut.

Stephen Baxter's "The Hunters of Pangaea" takes us back to the Jurassic era and into the minds of a species of intelligent dinosaur.

Pat Forde's "In Spirit" is the ultimate 9/11 story, drawing lessons about our humanity from the stuff of tragedy. The story has elicited much commentary in Analog's Web site forum, with many readers concluding that it is one of the most powerful stories of any type they have ever read.

Outstanding

All of the stories in this series are worth the purchase, but "The Cowboy from Wyoming" is one that I will always remember. What a great short about being tolerant of others' differences and not judging by appearance. The narrators are obviously professionally trained, and the sound quality of this program was superb. You can't go wrong with this one.

Decent collection of stories

I like 3 out of 4 of them very much--the 9/11 story at the end was incredibly sappy and naive, but the other three were good, especially "The Astronaut from Wyoming". Definitely not "hard" science fiction, much more like gentle human-interest fiction.

Good classic SF novel but usually dark

This is a nice collection of SF novels, style is pretty classic (with modern references). Worth the money, but be aware they are not usually finishing in a positive note. So classic good dark SF :)

Phew!

Wonderful, superb, please give us more, Mr Audible. Why not add it as a monthly subscription????? I have missed reading Analog for the past 10 years since eye problems stopped my 20 odd year subscription, so this was a like a breath of mountain air for me. To all free thinkers I can't recommend it highly enough, and I recommend it even higher to the rest!

2 great stories

Especially two stories made a profound impression on me:
;The astronaut from Wyoming; with a message about how stupidity in the media and religious fanatics can make scientific discoveries and progress very hard.
;in spirit; is a beautiful novel which actually made tears to my eyes (not very difficult) shows some promise and hope for mankind.

Very nice.

I'm a short story fan and these were, of course, the best.

Brilliant.

Two stories, In Spirit and The Astronaut from Wyoming are simply brilliant. Worth the price of admission and more.

Highly entertaining

This is a wonderful collection of short stories that riveted my wife and I during a car trip along the East Coast. As mentioned by another reviewer, "The Astronaut From Wyoming", is worth the price of this collection: deep, vivid characters; occasionally emotional and hilarious prose in a near-present time setting.

great collection

This was a good collection, but the last story really stands out, and the narrator, Stefan Rudnicki, was wonderful. I will be looking for more of his work.

Good Stories!

I enjoyed all of the stories. Well chosen anthology. I don't know why a review requires fifteen words!
