Story
Elton John is as much loved for his outrageous personality and witty outspokenness as for his music. Such shamelessness and sheer silliness rivals anything uttered by punk rockers, yet it is so typically Elton: honest and intemperate. Tragedy and heartbreak have played a large part in his life. Behind the parties, the hedonism, the lavish stage costumes, and silly glasses lies a more somber story. Between disputes with managers, legal wranglings, public breakups, and divorce, John has been faced with serious health problems and drug addictions.

Story
A weave of biography, criticism, and memoir, Shine Bright is Danyel Smith’s intimate history of Black women’s music as the foundational story of American pop. Smith has been writing this history for more than five years. But as a music fan, and then as an essayist, editor (Vibe, Billboard), and podcast host (Black Girl Songbook), she has been living this history since she was a latchkey kid listening to “Midnight Train to Georgia” on the family stereo.

On New Year's Eve, 1970, Paul McCartney told his lawyers to issue the writ at the High Court in London, effectively ending The Beatles. You might say this was the last day of the pop era. The following day, which was a Friday, was 1971. You might say this was the first day of the rock era. And within the remaining 364 days of this monumental year, the world would hear Don McLean's "American Pie", The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar", The Who's "Baba O'Riley", Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", and more.

Dreaming the Beatles is not another biography of the Beatles or a song-by-song analysis of the best of John and Paul. It isn't another exposé about how they broke up. It isn't a history of their gigs or their gear. It is a collection of essays telling the story of what this ubiquitous band means to a generation who grew up with the Beatles' music on their parents' stereos and their faces on T-shirts. What do the Beatles mean today? Why are they more famous and beloved now than ever? Find out.

The age of the rock star, like the age of the cowboy, has passed. Like the cowboy, the idea of the rock star lives on in our imaginations. What did we see in them? Swagger. Recklessness. Sexual charisma. Damn-the-torpedoes self-belief. A certain way of carrying themselves. Good hair. Interesting shoes. Talent we wished we had. What did we want of them? To be larger than life but also like us. To live out their songs. To stay young forever. No wonder many didn't stay the course.

Story
Dylan, who began working on the book in 2010, offers his insight into the nature of popular music. He writes over sixty essays focusing on songs by other artists, spanning from Stephen Foster to Elvis Costello, and in between ranging from Hank Williams to Nina Simone. He analyzes what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal. These essays are written in Dylan’s unique prose. And while ostensibly about music, they are really meditations on the human condition.

A Great Car Ride Audiobook to Listen with Friends
It’s funny, even though I wasn’t born until the 90s, a lot of the music that was talked about during this book were on my Kids Bop cassette tapes that I used to listen to all the time when I was growing up. Plus, my parents were big fans of many of the songs.
I have never listened to an audiobook quite like this one before where the narrator would say a set of ~10ish trivia questions provide answer choices, and then run through the answers to each of the questions. I think this book would be great to listen to on a car ride with a friend or family member and be able to pause in between either each one of the questions or each set of 10 and then try to guess the answers before listening to the answers. I did enjoy how the author inserted little fun facts in between the trivia questions to provide more context and explanation to some of the trivia questions.
I definitely give this audiobook 5 stars because it delivers on its promise of providing some great 80s trivia and fun facts! The narrator, who is also the author, was easy and enjoyable to listen to. He has an accent, but that didn’t deter him from the experience at all; if anything, it enhanced it. Great job all around.

Fun Facts and Quizzes for Music Lovers
This was a fun audiobook to listen to. Interspersed with the quizzes were interesting and sometimes surprising facts about the 80s, the music, and the musicians. I suggest having a pen and paper standing by when taking the quizzes. Since the author generously provided a PDF of the book, I began using it along with the audiobook and found it very helpful. I learned some things I didn’t know, and I found out that I also remembered quite a lot, too. It was very enjoyable but I had to put it down from time to time and keep going back to it because it was sort of addictive.
Since I am a music lover and the 80s produced some great music, I used it to create my own little trivia game. I had some friends over and we had a blast with it. The amount of time and effort that went into creating the book must have been daunting, but the outcome was well worth it. It's definitely going in my library.

I Want My MTV!
As a teenager of the 80s, I couldn't wait to listen to this audiobook. Let me tell you, it's totally rad man!
This brought back so many memories for me, it had me getting out my old playlists because it reminded of so many great songs and artists that I haven't heard in a long time.
When it came to questions about the artists themselves, I learned a lot of fun facts that never knew before.
It doesn't matter if you were into pop, hair bands, or heavy metal, it's all covered here, and more.
What a fun trip down memory lane! If you miss the 80s, like I do, then this one is for you!
