About this listen

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.

Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva's. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.

Amazing story!

Stumbled upon this Complete Gem, looking to fill the gap the First blade series left and oh boy! It sure did!

Incredible

This audiobook was a something I picked up on a random recommendation, so I did not expect to fall in love with it so utterly. It grabbed me from the first moment and never let me go, Equal parts wry humour, cleverness and snark, which is just my mix, It is so smart and witty that I found myself searching for everything else the author has written immediately afterwards. Several times I found myself replaying scenes or lines just to admire how razor sharp they were.

The world and story are unique and fascinating, I particularly loved the way that all the deep worldbuilding unfolds so naturally as related by the protagonist. His name is Kinsch and he is the very definition of a lovable rogue. The other characters are all distinct and interesting, I particularly loved Galva, the hardened war veteran and Norrigal the apprentice witch. I think the author should be commended on how well he writes extremely nuanced female characters.

A word on the narration. I'm almost certain that someone, probably several someones, told the author that narrating his own book in a fake Irish accent was a terrible idea. It shouldn't work, but it really, really does. It absolutely makes it and so suits the tone of both the main character and the story.

I've recommended this to several people who I know like sharp and sarcastic books and they all loved it as much as I did.
