Publisher's summary

After publishing a ghoulish article on how to make saltwater taffy in a haunted kitchen, accomplished screenwriter and playwright Kate Milford has shifted her talents toward books for young audiences. In Milford’s first novel, 13-year-old Natalie knows there’s something unnatural about Dr. Jake Limberleg when he comes into her father’s bicycle-repair shop. But when Limberleg claims he can perform miraculous healings, Natalie begins to seriously doubt whether she’s up to the challenge this potentially dangerous man presents.

Like a PG rated Neil Gaimen

Great story pacing. Not too scary. Would be fun to read to a child at night before bed to talk about and have fun being scared and learning classic Americana

Imperfect but gripping story, very fun

I really enjoyed this. Fans of later Kate Milford books won't be disappointed - I actually like the supernatural elements better in this book than in the Blue Crown books, although they share a sensibility. A few scenes (selling the bee, I mean, really?) are duds, some of it makes no sense even within its own world (like how the fair could be so big) and one aspect is flat-out annoying (why will nobody tell Natalie anything if she's so key to getting through the crisis) but for the most part it rolls My only solid quibble is the narration. it seems over- acted, with annoying dramatic pauses. And beware, the pauses between chapters are bewilderingly long.
