About this listen

In this collection of stories you'll meet a bunch of memorable guys including Lonesome Shorty, a cowpoke torn between the proud life in the saddle and the comforts of warm apartments and women; Buddy, the teen-age leper in Sioux Falls; Earl Grey, the great tea inventor and former Republican child; Casey, at the bat in Mudville again; Dionysus, the god of wine; and Roy Bradley, boy broadcaster.

Brilliantly funny, touching, and acute, these stories reveal the perilous situation of guys today.

Critic reviews

"With his inimitable style and recognizable voice, this is one author who really should read aloud his own work." (AudioFile)
"Brilliant and imaginative...Recommended for anyone who's a guy, who knows a guy, or enjoys good writing and a good laugh." (Houston Post)
"The author, perhaps as famous for his euphonious voice as for his writing, narrates well." (Library Journal)

A Garrison Keillor Classic

A couple of decades ago, I was going off to collage and on the long ride to the airport, I asked my parents to put in the new audio book I bought to smooth my first weeks. I didn't get to take it to school. My parents insisted I leave it in the car for them to finish.

If you're new to Keillor, you couldn't start at a better place. It's a classic of the Keillor oeuvre. This collection contains some of his most sardonic humor and those who find him occasionally cloying (as I do) will be pleased, too. And, of course, it's perfectly read by the author himself.

Intriguing but too depressing

This was a surprisingly dark book. Although punctuated by humorous antecdotes, virtually every story has a morbid and depressing aspect to it. The "guys" in this book are carrying some serious psychological baggage, and none seem able to resolve their issues to any satisfaction. Although very well written, the stories are far from light entertainment, and should probably be avoided altogether by those with melancholic tendencies. These stories take us to places very far from Lake Wobagon. Perhaps that was the author's main intent.
