Publisher's summary

World Fantasy Award-winning, best-selling author Robert McCammon makes a triumphant return to the epic horror and apocalyptic tone reminiscent of his books Swan Song and Stinger in this gripping new novel, The Border, a saga of an Earth devastated by a war between two marauding alien civilizations.

But it is not just the living ships of the monstrous Gorgons or the motion-blurred shock troops of the armored Cyphers that endanger the holdouts in the human bastion of Panther Ridge. The world itself has turned against the handful of survivors, as one by one they succumb to despair and suicide or, even worse, are transformed by otherworldly pollution into hideous Gray Men, cannibalistic mutants driven by insatiable hunger. Into these desperate circumstances comes an amnesiac teenaged boy who names himself Ethan - a boy who must overcome mistrust and suspicion to master unknowable powers that may prove to be the last hope for humanity's salvation. Those same powers make Ethan a threat to the warring aliens, long used to fearing only each other, and thrust him and his comrades into ever more perilous circumstances.

A major new novel from the unparalleled imagination of Robert McCammon, this dark epic of survival will both thrill listeners and make them fall in love with his work all over again.

Wow! I REALLY enjoyed this book!

What did you love best about The Border?

If I told you this book had aliens, zombies and psychic powers all rolled into an end-of-world theme, you'd probably run screaming from this book. I almost did. But this author actually made all this WORK! Not just work - but its a great story!

Who was your favorite character and why?

All the characters were VERY well developed and its hard to pick a favorite. Ethan, the main character is the obvious choice. But event he more minor characters - JD, Hannah, Nicki - are all great. The author didn't make the mistake of making the good guys perfect. They are flawed and human.

Have you listened to any of Fred Berman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Fred Berman is one of my absolute favorite narrators!

Any additional comments?

Kudos to Fred Berman, Kudos to Robert McCammon. You made this a GREAT listen!

Great book!

Very enjoyable from start to finish. Well worth the 5 star rating I gave it in my opinion. McCammons writing along with the excellent narration by Fred Berman easily takes your mind into this sifi novel adventure.

Not nearly as good as his other books imo

The narration was irritating & over the top in places. I found myself almost nauseated & certainly bored. Not a terrible book, but I'm not giving it above 3/5. Review by Rick

Pretty good!

Well at first I was kind of put off by the narrator because I'd never heard anything from him before. Once I got going though the narration felt natural and true to the characters.

Wow Great Story!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The story was great, character development was so good I felt like I knew them. Characters were believable(no super heroes, even the super hero) I was rooting for them from the beginning. The story was fast paced but not non stop action sequences, it had the right mix to tell a good story while keeping your intrest peaked. It was definitely more than I expected and the ending was surprising and moving. I was even able to look past the authors poor firearms knowledge which is usually a deal breaker for me( they are magazines not clips, and revolvers don't have safeties). I definitely recommend this book as its not just another alien apocalypse story it was much deeper and very entertaining a 5 star book.

Surprisingly Disappointing

I was a McCammon fan many years ago. Hadn't read any of his books in a long time. Then I listened to "Sings the Nightbird" and LOVED it (and put the Matthew Corbitt sequels in my Wish List). It got me interested in McCammon again, so I downloaded this book based on the reviews -- but I should've read more of them. As I was listening to this, I kept asking myself, "Is this the same author?" It truly is disappointingly bad compared to that excellent "Nightbird" book.

As others have said, there's very little character development, zero humor (even apocalyptic stories can have some humor), and the plot is just... dull. The narrator is great, but listening to "Dave's" constant angry rants really gets on my nerves. And as a woman, I hate that the Panther Ridge leader, a woman (yay), completely loses it and Dave takes over cuz, you know, he's a macho man. Grrrr.

Many times I thought to stop listening because I'd lost interest and didn't care about the characters... but I kept hoping it would get better... then I was too far along not to find out the outcome. I've got a little bit more to go, but I'm not optimistic that the end will have been worth it.

Deus ex prior works

Writing is solid right up to the end. Swansong, this ain't. In fact, feels like the freshman work of an author destined to write Swansong. Think, "Swansong Lite".

Narration was mostly on par with upper tier audible works but at one point, the guy pronounced 'deluge' as 'duh-looj'. Couldn't stop thinking about it; totally brought me out of story mode.

Our Own Worst Enemy

I like that the story showed how people who were not necessarily humanitarians, came together when tragedy struck, and became their best selves
