About this listen

A Mass Murder. A Disappearance. A Cemetery Ransacked.

It looked like another ordinary day in Los Angeles. Then night came...Evil as old as the centuries has descended upon the City of Angels - it comes as a kiss from the terrifying but seductive immortals. Slowly at first, then by the legions, the ravenous undead choke Los Angeles with bloodthirsty determination - and the hordes of monstrous victims steadily mount each night.

High above glitter city a deadly contest begins. In the decaying castle of a long-dead screen idol, the few remaining human survivors prepare to face the Prince of Evil and his satanic disciples. Whilst the very forces of nature are called into play, isolating the city from the rest of the world and leaving it at the mercy of the blood-hungry vultures of the night...They Thirst

An OK vampire story

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The beginning and ending parts of the book were listenable. For me there was heavy drag in the middle. Found that I had to force myself to keep listening. There were also parts of the story where the writing seemed just "meh". I've read much better by McCammon.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Ray Porter did a fair job overall, and tried to give distinct voices to the main characters.

A true classic, but that's already been decided...

This was the best vampire story I've ever read, and that includes "Salem's Lot", by Steven King. Till now, I thought nothing could top that one. Now, I must go find more books by Mr. Robert McCammon.

They Thirst: Vampires Take LA

I downloaded this book four and a half years ago, and have listened to it at least twice since then. However, it's taken me a while to articulate my thoughts about this book, which is very often derivative, but which I clearly enjoy quite a bit. I felt I owed it to this book to at least make some sense of my thoughts on it.

Part of the problem is that I can't help but compare the book to Stephen King's far-superior "Salem's Lot." "They Thirst" is heavily influenced by King's earlier novel (which admittedly, owes a debt itself to Bram Stoker's "Dracula"), but takes King's notion of a vampire fiefdom to a grander scale, replacing gothic for action movie.

But for its flaws, this story of a determined group of ordinary Angelenos fighting a growing tide of vampires is pretty good. It's competently, if not spectacularly, written, and never lags. Ray Porter's voice acting is, as is so often the case, wonderful.

Somewhere down the road I'll probably listen to this again.

Great listen.

I believe that Ray Porter can do no wrong as a narrator. The story is good, the characters are good, and the plot and pace are good , but the narration of this good book is nothing short of fantastic! Worth the purchase price, yet oddly reminds me of The Stain by Guillermo DelTorro. Overall I recommend this book for all vampire fans, just don't expect any glittery skinned romantic vampires because these fangers are ravenous killers.

Excellent!

I was on the edged of my seat and nerves throughout the whole book.
If you enjoy reading, or listening to a story about Vampieres, this is a must.

kinda average

The performance was 5 stars. I loved they way he reads, but the story was average at best. I found it difficult to finish because I couldn't find a character to root for. I couldn't care how it ended. I had about an hour left of the book and heard enough.

Top 3 Vampire Book (God fearing vampires)

Narration is great, if he read all of McCammon books I would buy them all.

These are real deal vampires. Fear and repelled by religious objects type of vampires. They kill and stalk, they do not try to make you fall in love.

Up there with Necroscope in the top tiervampire stories.

Good story, but not into vampires.

This is a well crafted story with unexpected twists. I am not a fan of this much death.
