About this listen

They call themselves the Brethren: three disgraced former judges doing time in a Florida federal prison.

One was sent up for tax evasion. Another, for skimming bingo profits. And the third, for a career-ending drunken joyride.

Meeting daily in the prison law library, taking exercise walks in their boxer shorts, these judges-turned-felons can reminisce about old court cases, dispense a little jailhouse justice, and contemplate where their lives went wrong.

Or they can use their time in prison to get very rich --very fast. And so they sit, sprawled in the prison library, furiously writing letters, fine-tuning a wickedly brilliant extortion scam ... while events outside their prison walls begin to erupt.

A bizarre presidential election is holding the nation in its grips--and a powerful government figure is pulling some very hidden strings. For the Brethren, the timing couldn't be better. Because they've just found the perfect victim...

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Grisham in slow motion

Mr. Grisham continues to weave a tale of wonderment. One has to continue to learn how things turn out, albeit the long and sometimes slowness of this one tends to allow the reader to put the book down for a rest. I'm sure the purist Grisham lovers will disagree with my expose, but Grisham has done much better.

20 year novel was still fresh and relevant

I decided to read this novel because I had read a review that it was one of Grisham’s best. I agree in terms of schemes set into play. Also the setting and story of the book was peculiarly germane to today’s current events. I enjoyed it and recommend it.

Great narration for an excellent book

With John Grisham you can’t go wrong, but the way a story is told can get you off easily, Frank Muller does a great job in this master piece, allowing the listener to really feel the wind at the beach and the heat of Florida, as well as the tense moments throughout.

Very Good Story

This book is a classic Grisham read. The story grabs you right from the beginning. Frank is a fantastic reader and I highly recommend other audiobooks that he reads. The story keeps you interested for every hour of the book. One of Grisham‘s best in my opinion.

The Brethren

Fascinating story especially in light of recent and current goings on in Washington DC and the office of President. Prescient, I’d say!!

Good Book - Didn't care for the narrator

Have enjoyed every Grisham book I've read, and this one is no exception. Although I am also sad to hear that the narrator is no longer with us, I have listed to two books he has narrated and find his style somewhat irritating. He does a great job when using the southern drawl for characters, but the narrative can drive you nuts. The book overcomes the narration, and remember, it's only my opinion.

A Fun Listen

The story is classic Grisham in its own right. And Frank Muller's narration is an excellent blending of the story and the presentation.

Favorite Grisham

Would you consider the audio edition of The Brethren to be better than the print version?

No. Narrator drove me nuts.

How could the performance have been better?

Every single sentence does not require the drama that the narrator seems unable to let go of. If this book wasn't so good, I would have dropped it in a heartbeat.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laughed the whole way through.

Any additional comments?

Love this book. My favorite Grisham to date. It was funny, interesting, and engaging.
