About this listen

While staying at a friend’s house in an apparently humdrum London suburb, the sceptical Hugh Grainger sees and then converses with an unsettling stranger from his bedroom window in the very dead of night. But what could be the meaning of this curious visitation? ‘Hold very tight, please!’ E. F. Benson is well known for his Mapp and Lucia novels but his ghost and supernatural stories are marvellous jewels, combining elegant writing and moments of blood-curdling horror. Here Greg Wagland narrates one of the best of them, for Magpie Audio.

Where does The Bus-Conductor: An E.F. Benson Ghost Story rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The story keeps you interested from the beginning and makes you think about the paralells of dreaming and death.

What other book might you compare The Bus-Conductor: An E.F. Benson Ghost Story to and why?

The King In Yellow - Robert W. Chambers
Has similarities to The Yellow Sign, where a young man and woman share nightmares about hearses and a mysterious man watching them.

Have you listened to any of Greg Wagland’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. A Christmas Carol. Much different, of course.

If you could take any character from The Bus-Conductor: An E.F. Benson Ghost Story out to dinner, who would it be and why?

The one who experienced the death dream. I would want to know his thoughts about the afterlife and how sleep appears to bring us a sample of it. Realy trippy stuff, lol!

Any additional comments?

I love classic ghost stories.
