Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Witch's Daughter comes the story of Gretel, all grown up and investigating a series of mysterious disappearances off the coast of Bavaria.

Gretel - yes, that Gretel - is now all grown up and working as a private investigator in 18th-century Bavaria. Her professional interest is piqued when she begins to hear whispers of of mysterious goings-on off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein: sailors are disappearing, and there are rumors of mermaids and sea creatures and all manner of slippery, sea-based happenings.

Ordinarily, Gretel's interest in sea life does not extend beyond that which is edible and already on the plate before her. However, funds are low, and the captain of the ship Arabella makes a tempting offer of good pay and a free cruise in return for her detective services. With a splendid new wig packed, Hans as her bodyguard on the journey north, and the promise of two weeks of fine dining and erudite company while sailing around the picturesque Frisian Islands, what could possibly go wrong?

I really enjoyed the characters!

I love this book I've listened to it multiple times at bed time and the early morning. It was really easy to finish this book because it was easy to follow and fun. I laughed often and was delighted at the wit and humor, sprinkled with a bit of action. There's also nothing better than a good British narrator and comfort food and a cozy spot to relax.

great light listen

I like the story as it is. the concept is cute and it's well executed. I did wish there were a few more fairy tale things in it like another character or two worked in there, but Hans has such a big personality you don't miss it. I'm definitely going to be listening again.

I’m really enjoying the series… and this is no exception!

I’m really enjoying the series and this book is no exception! It started of as a series in which I thought… how bazar. But once my mind adjusted to the authors style… Well, I’m thoroughly enjoying the books. For my way of listening, I generally start a series and don’t stop until the last book is finished. It’s hard to say which is best in this collection as they all seamlessly fit together. If you enjoyed the first book.. you will no doubt enjoy this one.

Great Series

This is truly one of the best series I've read. So dry and witty. Charming characters, hilarious quips and scenarios, terrific descriptions and probably the best choice of narrator in all of Audible!

Fun Series!

This is the second audio book I have listened to by this author and narrator.Love the storyline but the narrator would change her tone/dialect throughout the book for the characters. Other than that, I really enjoyed it!

entertaining

The main character is a 19th century woman detective, a bit rigid and convinced of her brilliance. The story set at sea is very descriptive and entertaining.. The plot is unchallenging.

Cozy and delightful

I enjoy this author’s stories but was captured by reading the synapsis. I once lived on Sylt. The Frisian Islands are magical places and the details even down to the island greeting “Moin Moin” brought a smile and happy memories of my time there.

Entertaining

I love this series, and this one is just as entertaining as the others, but it wasn't quite as funny. It had its moments, to be sure, but it wasn't quite as laugh out loud as the first few. Even so, I enjoyed it and look forward to book four!
