About this listen
There are millions of stories in the city - some magical, some tragic, others terror-filled or triumphant. Jonah Kirk’s story is all of those things as he draws listeners into his life in the city as a young boy, introducing his indomitable grandfather, also a "piano man"; his single mother, a struggling singer; and the heroes, villains, and everyday saints and sinners who make up the fabric of the metropolis in which they live - and who will change the course of Jonah’s life forever.
Welcome to The City, a place of evergreen dreams where enchantment and malice entwine, where courage and honor are found in the most unexpected corners and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

There once was a killer who knew the night, its secrets and rhythms. How to hide within its shadows. When to hunt. He roamed from town to town, city to city, choosing his prey for their beauty and innocence. His cruelties were infinite, his humanity long since forfeit. But still... he had not yet discovered how to make his special mark among monsters, how to come fully alive as Death. This is the story of how he learned those things, and of what we might do to ensure that he does not visit us.

Story
A mind-bending, genre-twisting debut novel. In West Akron, there lived a reclusive elderly man who always wore mittens, even in July. He had no friends and no family; all over town, he was known only as The the Man from Primrose Lane. And on a summer day in 2008, someone murdered him.

Story
Only God knew why Jillian Slater agreed to return to New Orleans on the news that her father had finally drunk himself to death. It's not like they were close. She hadn't seen him - or her grandmother, the ice queen - in almost 20 years. But when Adella Atwater, the manager of her grandmother's apartment house, called and said her expenses would be paid if she'd fly in for the burial, a free trip to New Orleans was too intriguing to resist.

I can't believe the review i'm giving for a Koontz
Would you try another book from Dean Koontz and/or Korey Jackson?
I love Dean Koontz novels. I have most of them in Hardback, Paperback, and Audio. This one however was a struggle to get through.
What was most disappointing about Dean Koontz’s story?
It took several days for me to force myself through the book. When you get to the end there are redeeming qualities, you really get a grasp of what Koontz is trying to get across, but getting there is a painful journey. I don't mind that kind of journey in life, but it shouldn't be in a novel.
Have you listened to any of Korey Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I did enjoy his voices, and performance.
Was The City worth the listening time?
No, not really, the book was a struggle to get through.
Any additional comments?
Koontz is a wonderful author. I have enjoyed the majority of his Novels and I still think he is the best. Unfortunately this is not one of the best.

Koontz with a safety belt
Would you consider the audio edition of The City to be better than the print version?
I consider the audio versions of most books better that the print version. Bad question
Who was your favorite character and why?
The city. It is nice to think about a benevolent caring force in the universe that might help guide our actions.
Which scene was your favorite?
multiple good scenes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I would savor the book. Listen at times when you can give it your full attention.
Any additional comments?
If Dean Koontz has scared the crap out of you in the past, had you sitting in your house scared to move before, and you are afraid to read any more of his books. Trust me. This book is well written and not TOO scary.

Is this a Dean Koontz novel?
The story was great. It was definitely an enjoyable listening experience. A surprise from everything else I've heard/ read by Koontz. I guess I was expecting more of the supernatural, push-the-limits-of-your-imagination storyline I'm accustomed to from Koontz. So kudos to him for showing us he can be a versatile author.

Was not at all what i was expecting...
Where does The City rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I was pleasantly surprised though. It took me a while to get into the book...but before I knew it, I was hooked and hadn't even realized it. The story flowed so well and was presented, in my opinion, as the first hand account of an individual and how even though they seemed extraoridinary, were in fact every day occurances that for the most part we only read about. But it was uniquely crafted and narrated by a little boy and his perspective and how normal every day occurances can seem mystical to a child.
