About this listen
Anna Schmidt is too independent for a woman of the 1800s. Worse yet, she doesn’t have a man to curb her unwomanly tendencies. When she takes a claim of 160 acres and then another 160 acres for a tree claim, has she taken on more than she can handle? It’s work that could cripple a man; a woman alone can’t expect help or understanding when she takes on this one willingly. Flooding, blizzards, heat, dust, and an incredible amount of physical labor are all set to do this determined woman in. She takes it on and through the years, succeeds despite the odds, despite not having a man to depend on, showing herself and the world that this woman not only can, but will, make a home, a farm, and a ranch on the wild prairies. Follow along in her journal telling of her experiences.

Brent Preston and his wife were die-hard city dwellers. But when their second child arrived, the shine came off urban living. In 2003 they bought a hundred acres and a rundown farmhouse and set out to build a real farm, one that would sustain their family, nourish their community, heal their environment, and turn a profit. The New Farm is Preston’s memoir of a decade of grinding toil and perseverance. But as they learned how to grow food, and to succeed at the business of farming, they also found that a small, sustainable, organic farm could be an engine for change, a path to a more just and sustainable food system.

Story
Curiosity just might be the death of Mrs. Murphy - and her human companion, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen. Small towns are like families: Everyone lives very close together. . .and everyone keeps secrets. Crozet, Virginia, is a typical small town - until its secrets explode into murder. Crozet's thirty-something post-mistress, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, has a tiger cat (Mrs. Murphy) and a Welsh Corgi (Tucker), a pending divorce, and a bad habit of reading postcards not addressed to her.

Story
Martha’s Vineyard, 1898. In her first life, Ida Russell had been a painter. Five years ago, she had confidently walked the halls of Boston’s renowned Museum School, enrolling in art courses that were once deemed “unthinkable” for women to take and showing a budding talent for watercolors. But no more. Ida Russell is now Ida Pease, resident of a seaside farm on Vineyard Haven and wife to Ezra, a once-charming man who has become an inattentive and altogether unreliable husband.

As he prepares to take over his family’s farm business, war intrudes.

Story
Farming has been in John Connell's family for generations, but he never intended to follow in his father's footsteps. Until, one winter, after more than a decade away, he finds himself back on the farm. Connell records the hypnotic rhythm of the farming day - cleaning the barns, caring for the herd, tending to sickly lambs, helping the cows give birth. Alongside the routine events, there are the unforeseen moments when things go wrong: when a calf fails to thrive, when a sheep goes missing, when an argument between father and son erupts and things are said that cannot be unsaid.

Story
To the wild and fabulous country where the Rio Grande makes its big bend, J. O. Langford came in 1909 with his wife and daughter in search of health and a home. High on a bluff overlooking the spot where Tornillo Creek pours its waters into the turbulent Rio Grande, the Langfords built their home, a rude structure of adobe blocks in a land reputed to be inhabited only by bandits and rattlesnakes. Big Bend is the story of the Langfords' life in the rugged and spectacularly beautiful country which they came to call their own.

She did it again
After listening to a female character in this story being so strong and powerful one just feels so inspired. Now when I look at farms and ranches by my own house it makes me want to buy a farm, or at least a horse or two. Well done. a must read or listen.

NOT LGBTQ
l have read a number of books by Ms. Meinel and enjoyed them all,so I was greatly disappointed to find that this book is a story about a heterosexual relationship. It could have been another great LGBTQ story but Ms. Meinel copped out and we have another story about a woman who needs a man to compete her. Had I known I would not have wasted my money, and now I'll probably not trust any more of her book description so no more books by Ms. Meinel.
If you're looking for a straight story then you'll probably like this one.
