About this listen

Set 25,000 years in the past, The Clan of the Cave Bear is an epic tale of love, identity and the struggle to survive.

'BEAUTIFUL, EXCITING, IMAGINATIVE' NEW YORK TIMES
'MAGIC' TELEGRAPH

When an earthquake destroys her family's camp, Ayla is left orphaned and alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land, with death all but guaranteed.

But then she is found by a woman of the Clan, a people very different from her own. To them, Ayla looks peculiar and ugly - her blonde hair and blue eyes marking her out as one of the Others, who have recently invaded their homeland. Yet Iza, the Clan's medicine woman, cannot leave the child to die.

As Ayla learns the ways of the Clan, Iza grows to love her, and the rest of the Clan begins to accept her. Everyone, that is, except Brun, the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader. Where others see similarity, he can only see difference. And as his hatred for the strange girl of the Others deepens, Brun grows more determined to get his revenge . . .

The audio is even better than the book

I read the book years ago, and it has stick with me as a truly memorable series. The audio version exceeded my expectations as the narrator was excellent, and it was extremely well done overall.

A journey back in time

I found this story absolutely capitaving. I've visited many cave dwelling where there is evidence of of Neanderthal and other ancients peoples. This story brought it all to life in the most vivid way. Loved it! Loved the narration too!

very good narrator for a familiar tale

If you could sum up The Clan of the Cave Bear in three words, what would they be?

i read these books when I was a teenager and was looking forward to hearing them again. There is a version that I found online but the narrator was terrible! Reading like she was reading a recipe book. This narrator was very good and I enjoyed the story just as much the second time round.

Riveting and challenging

An amazing recounting of a human child growing up with Neanderthals. Jean writes with historical knowledge and great insight to herbal remedies and medicine.
Ayla’s journey is but only starting, and I can’t wait to start the next book.
Highly recommend read or listen.

Just amazing!!

One of the best books I’ve ever read or listened to - ever!! This book brings you back to reality in the sense of how far we have developed as people and how many many things we take for granted each and every day!! Just amazing

Such a classic

I read this book as a teenager and could not put it down. I decided to revisit the magic by listening to the audio book 30 years later, and it is still just as riveting!

gave up after 4h.

I found it very reminiscent of Jack London at his most chauvinistic. The society is represented as being totally patriarchal, to an absurd level. And I can't shake the feeling that the author kinda agrees with this. Maybe it gets better later on, but I gave up when the obviously evil guy starts doing obviously evil stuff. if you're looking for any nuance or subtlety, this ain't the book for you.
