Publisher's summary

For years Heather Tradescant had dreamed of the journey she and her father would take to England - a pilgrimage to the great gardens of history. Now that her father is dead, Heather is determined to fulfill his dreams. Unfortunately her request to see the fabled 17th-century garden of Troytan House is denied by the owner. Though unwelcome, she braves the walls of briars and reaches the Victorian manor house beyond. She senses a strange mission of evil lurking, tainting the manor's peaceful beauty. Only then does Heather begin to wonder whether it is only stories of long-vanished witchcraft that haunt Troytan House or whether there is some more modern horror, nearer at hand and far, far more dangerous.

Continuing in the classic tradition she established with such acclaimed novels of suspense as Stitches in Time, Vanish with the Rose, and House of Stone, New York Times best-selling author Barbara Michaels has penned a chilling tale that will keep you listening until the last minute.

Mysterious Gothic England

Barbara Michaels (the author’s real name is Barbara Mertz who is known as “Elizabeth Peters” for her Egyptian mystery books) is one of my new favorite authors. Her voice in the characters is always so strong, the people seem so real and carefully described in detail. The narration was terrific too, Barbara Rosenblat is really talented. I like her Amelia Peabody narration too. There are hints of Jane Eyre but with a few changes…This story had some true thrilling elements (exciting scary but not too gruesome) and I had my theories about the mystery but it ended slightly in a surprising way. It’s a pretty good ending too, at least in my opinion. It must be hard to find the right ending to a story like this one, but I think it tied up most of the threads of the story well. I had a few questions about the plot at the end but I might have missed things too. I’ve also enjoyed the Amelia Peabody books, so highly recommend those as well!

Another outstanding narration!

Rosenblatt always makes a book come alive. Her narration makes this book! As always the historical information and attention to details in a Barbara Michaels book is top-notch, but the narrative performance made the story interesting to listen to.

Kept my interest

I enjoyed this book and it kept my interest. It kept you guessing who was the”bad guy”. I enjoyed all of the characters and laughed out, loud more than a few times. Barbara Rosenblatt is my favorite, all-time narrator.

Mostly a lovestory!! But what a narrator!

The narrator nailed it!! The story wasn't my favorite of Ms. Michael's. But, pretty clever dialogue and Barbara Rosenblat brought the heroine to life! bravo!!

Do not bother

Dull, anticlimactic and disappointing. I am a fan but considered this book a waste of time. A real dud.

Disappointed

The story was shallow with little development. And the narrator was terrible. Hard voice, inappropriate and careless inflections, just off interpretation of story. Won't purchase anything else narrated by her.

Ugh narrator

I’m still listening to the story and never review a book before finishing it but omg this narrator is driving me nuts!!! The story is so far pretty good but the narrator sounds like a tired 65+ year old has has spent most of her life smoking, when the main character is supposed to be a vibrant 20 something year old.
The narrator’s tired breathing is sooo annoying; she takes breathes while talking, like someone does when they’re tired from a long day of hard labor! Omg!
Note to all authors: CHOOSE WISELY! This is a good story but I can’t concentrate enough to know if it is!! I keep having to start it over & over! I’ll probably have to return it. This narrator would be a great voice for older females characters or spooky stories but absolutely NOT for a 20 something year old. Her voice is just too harsh/hoarse probably from smoking. :\
Update: I could not finish it. I cannot get past the narrator’s voice.
