Amanda Quick
With 22 million of her books in print, and 12 consecutive New York Times best-sellers to her credit, Amanda Quick is a phenomenally popular author of historical romances. With This Ring, set in Regency England, sends a beautiful, headstrong woman on a perilous quest for the Forbidden Rings of Aphrodite. To recover her family’s meager fortunes, Beatrice Poole must locate the antiquities stolen from her favorite uncle shortly before his highly suspicious death. Since the Forbidden Rings have a legendary history of magic and mystery, the resourceful Beatrice heads for one man who can help her find them: the darkly handsome Earl, the “Mad Monk” of Monkcrest. Fans around the world are drawn to the dashing heroes and passionate adventures in Amanda Quick’s novels, but it is her sparkling humor and lively wit that keep them coming back for more. Veteran narrator Barbara Rosenblat provides the perfect voices, conveying delicious innuendos, villainous slurs, and lively banter with ease.

This was a very refreshing palate cleanser from more recently recorded or written works in this genre.
It honestly made me think,”Whoa, did I just check out an 8-cassette audiobook from the library in 1995?!” 😆
I really enjoyed this story. It took the time to fully develop the entire mystery as well as the characters so it didn’t feel like a romance jamming in a detective storyline then rushing to the finish. It gave appropriate attention to the multiple genres it spans which was really cool.
It definitely felt a little slow at times but I didn’t mind as it fit with the time this story was written and recorded. There’s so much shallow and repetitive drivel these days, this book stands out in the robust plot line and obviously careful groundwork for many other books to follow.
The narrator was indeed slow and there were much longer pauses in general and between chapters than today’s audiobooks such that l kept wondering if the book had stopped playing.., but nope! That’s a feature, not a bug, people. I played it at 1.2 and could have done faster.
This book was also very funny and the narrator did a phenomenal job with the many voices and accents.
Excellent old school historical mystery romance, with matching narration

What other book might you compare With This Ring to and why?
I couldn't stop thinking of the Amelia Peabody series that Barbara Rosenblat also narrates most often. This didn't take away from the excellent narration and delightful story. Beatrice is my favorite kind of woman. Strong minded and strong willed but appreciative of a strong man who can balance her and keep her safe.Which scene was your favorite?
I really liked the scene where Beatrice forces her way into the Earl of Montecrest's home. Her man handling of the butler was simply delightful.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I enjoyed the book so much that the next one is queued up in my listening list.Any additional comments?
This was my first Arcane society story and I kept thinking so where is the underlying story of this society. Apparently it was down played in this story. Also, the narrator's voice sounds a little older than I really think Beatrice and Leo at 24 and 40 should have sounded. It's a picky comment and certainly didn't ruin the book but it might bother some listeners. The narrator does a great job of keeping the character's dialog distinct so you know who is speaking and with great delivery. It makes up for this inconsistency.

I listen to a ridiculous amount of audiobooks and it’s pretty rare that a narrator will bother me. None of the other reviews mentioned the narrator, so maybe nobody else even noticed the narrator’s habits, but I couldn’t help noticing. The narrator seems to think that breathing in deeply/inhaling loudly enhances the story telling. And the pauses. And the occasional mouth noises/swallowing sounds. Oh man. And the loud inhales are between almost EVERY SENTENCE. It was a little maddening - but, hey, like I said, since other reviews don’t mention it, maybe I’m in the minority with noticing these habits.
If you have the Audible Escape package, I don’t think the narration is so bad that you shouldn’t download the book. But the narration is annoying enough so that I think I would’ve returned this book if I had used a credit to purchase this book.
