Publisher's summary

Private eye Charlie Meiklejohn is called in by insurance companies to investigate a suspected serial arsonist. The arsonist, Carson Danvers, has been on a fanatical crusade since the loss of his wife and son, burning down a series of old, shut-up wooden buildings in which random outbreaks of madness and murder have been occurring. Meiklejohn begins to follow the criminal's trail, but finds himself teaming up with his quarry to face the source of these strange outbreaks: a malfunctioning alien space probe.

Critic reviews

"Wilhelm is in top form as the thriller plot races along while characters teeter over an abyss of insanity and loss." (Publishers Weekly)
"Wilhelm's imaginative splicing of SF and horror produces a fast-moving, impelling story that should appeal to her sizable readership. Recommended." (Library Journal)

Kate Wilhelm was an amazing author!

She had such a range of stories. This was a wonderful mystery in a more Sci-Fi type genre but still as entertaining as her Barbara Holloway stories. A great read!

Just can't do sci fi

I started listening to Kate Wilhelm's books because I just love Anna Fields. I particularly like Wilhelm's legal myteries involving Barbara Holloway. I downloaded this book without reading the description because I was so delighted to see a new Wilhelm book narrated by Fields. I tried, but I just can't do science fiction!

Must Love Sci Fi & Anna

What would have made The Dark Door better?

A faster pace, but I am NOT a fan of Sci Fi, but love the late great Anna Fields reading voice.

What was most disappointing about Kate Wilhelm’s story?

Like the other reviewer, I purchased due to A.F. reading the Barbara Holloway series, which are great and not to be missed. I did tuff the 8 hrs out hoping it would get better. This is it for any more new purchases of Sci Fi for me, I don't care if it is my fave reader!

Which scene was your favorite?

I love both the main characters. Author should have put them together in a mystery without the sci fi portion. They are great together with their humor and love for each other. Great use of the couples intellect.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Dark Door?

You can tell author was on her way to better writing or story telling with this story. It had the mystery, humor and the adventure, but it was thin on plot and author left too much to sci fi.
