About this listen

Considered "one of the masters of psychological fiction in America" (San Francisco Chronicle), Kate Wilhelm serves up a chilling puzzle that will keep listeners captivated until the very end.

When Jud Connors, a successful writer, is found murdered in his isolated cabin in the woods of Oregon, his daughter Abby's world starts to fall apart. Who wanted her father dead and why? More puzzling is how anyone could have gotten to the cabin undetected. Was the murderer someone Jud knew?

As Abby embarks on her own investigation, she soon realizes that the clue to the murderer's identity is buried in her father's latest novel, finished just weeks before his death. But will she be able to see through the fiction in time, before the killer comes after her?

Critic reviews

"The star of the book, strangely, is the cabin itself, a perversely menacing version of a Thomas Kincade painting and a deliciously eerie setting for the mystery and murder, beckoning the reader to step inside." (Publishers Weekly)
"Wilhelm is a first-rate novelist. Her characters are well drawn, the setting is real, and the pace keeps the reader raptly involved to the last page." (Library Journal)

Entertaining

Very entertaining, the recording abruptly cuts off the last few words in every chapter. Disappointing

Riveting story

Kate Wilhelm doesn't disappoint, as usual. This story is the audiobook equivalent of "couldn't put it down."However, I have a bone to pick with the excellent narrator, Marguerite Gavin - her work is wonderful, however, she should have respected the author enough to research the proper pronunciations of "Spokane" and "Willamette." Ms Wilhelm writes about this area and must cringe hearing her mangle those words in the book. Anyone from that region can pick that out in a heartbeat.

Did not disappoint

I was very impressed with this book. It was thoughtfully written; as you can feel the heroines hurt, heart ache and grief. This book could easily become a two series; with the follow up giving a new life to the main character. It has suspense, emotion and heart.

Soothing Reader’s Voice

Love, confusion, death & new beginnings. I only wish reader pronounced places or things in Oregon correctly!

I liked it

Unlike the other reviewers I enoyed the book and the narrator. I listen to a lot of books. A bit predictable.

learn the language

I am barely in chapter 3 and am already distracted by the actor's mispronounced words. Too bad, I usually like Wilhelm's work.

extremely tedious

i have been listening to audio books for 3 years now and unfortunately this is the first book i stopped listening to after the first part; this is the worst narrator - a continuous low drone that is irritating along with a so so story line. I have enjoyed wilhelm's other novels but will be careful in future and make sure this i do not purchase any more books by this narrator.

annoying and predictable

The plot was way too predictable. The characters were annoying and hard to relate to. Very little plot or character development. Writing was unoriginal and uninteresting.

Tedious at best

The narrator does little to enhance the pace of this tedious novel. I was never convinced to care about any of the characters, waiting for the plot to develop was as much fun as waiting for paint to dry, and I stopped listening after part one. Not even my desire for some minimal entertainment while walking on the treadmill at the gym could keep me presing "play". This was my first book selection as a new Audible member. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Hopefully, I'll do better next time.
